Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 8.1 will launch on 17 October 2013

The Windows 8.1 update will see the return of the ‘Start’ button as well as other significant changes to the operating system.

Windows 8.1 will be offered as a free download to every user of Windows 8, and will go live at 12 midday UK time on October 17. Updates will be rolled out via the Windows Store.

Devices sold after October 18 will run Windows 8.1, and the operating system will also be available at retail from this date.
