3D TV

3D Television employs some technique of 3D presentation, such as stereoscopic capture, multi-view capture, or 2D plus depth, and a 3D display - a special viewing device to project a television program into a realistic three-dimensional field.

Now, in 2010, television stations are started to air 3D programmes using the same technology as 3D movies, like Avatar.

On 1st January 2010, the world's first 3D channel, SKY 3D, started broadcasting nationwide in South Korea by Korea Digital Satellite Broadcasting.

Recently Sky TV UK announced that they will be launching a Sky 3D channel in 2010. This will bring content such as sport, entertainment events, and other three-dimensional programming to its subscribers.

The Sky 3DTV system will require a special "3D ready" television, Sky+HD DVR box and the special 3D TV "shutter" glasses, required for the 3D TV experience.

Sky 3DTV

Although various tests 3D screenings have taken place in recent years, it was only in January 2010 that Sky TV UK announced the start of their 3D programming.

Their first 3D TV programme will be a UK Premier League football match, between Arsenal and Manchester United on Sunday 31st January 2010. This will take places in 3D at nine specially selected – and secret pubs in – London, Manchester, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Dublin.

Eight specially engineered 3D camera rigs will house sixteen of Sky’s high definition cameras, to provide multi-angle stereoscopic coverage. A purpose-built 3D outside broadcast truck will enable live mixing between shots, slow motion replays and the inclusion of 3D graphics. A dedicated commentary team will also support the 3D transmission.

From April, Sky will screen at least one 3D Premier League match in hundreds of pubs across the country in an attempt to drum up public enthusiasm before launching a dedicated 3D channel beamed into homes in the autumn.

The 3D channel will initially be available to Sky's 1.6m HD customers at no additional cost to the £57 per month they currently pay. Although Sky have not confirmed or denied that an additional subscription may be required for their 3D TV channel at a later stage. The Sky HD box will be compatible with Sky's 3D TV Service, and all users will need is a 3D TV.

The Sky 3d TV channel frequency is:

Frequency 12382
Polarisation H
Symbol Rate 29500
FEC 3/4

This Sky 3D channel frequency is on the Astra 2A satellites North beam frequencies, which can be difficult to receive at certain times of the day in Spain.

It is only available on Sky HD receivers.

The Sky 3d TV Channel is not currently available to the public on their own personal Sky HD boxes. Although the Sky 3D TV frequency is active, it is pretty certain that the Sky 3D TV channel will only be available to those 9 pubs and bars that are part of this trail run. The full Sky 3d TV channel is expected to be made available to all Sky HD customers later in 2010.

Sky 3D will be compatible with the 3D ready TVs being launched in the UK and Ireland during 2010 from major manufacturers such as LG, Panasonic, Samsung and Sony. 3D ready TVs come in two different formats – Active and Passive. Sky 3D works with both. You’ll need to wear glasses with both types. All the major TV manufacturers are launching both Active and Passive models so check them both out and choose the one that works best for you.

The first 3D TVs and 3D glasses should be available to buy in the UK from Spring this year, with more arriving in the Autumn.

Sky 3D will first launch in pubs up and down the country, giving as many people as possible the opportunity to experience the magic of 3D TV. A selection of pubs will screen 3D to begin with and as more 3D TV’s become available we’ll be taking 3D to your local.

From this Spring, Sky customers with a Sky+HD box, a new 3D TV and 3D glasses will be able to watch our Sky 3D preview channel showing clips and highlights from the kind of shows you can expect to see when our 3D channel is launched later this year.

The Sky 3D channel will offer a selection of the best available 3D programmes including live Sky Sports and Sky Movies in 3D.

3d TV Events

FIFA have announced that the 2010 World Cup will be filmed in the 3D format, but no details have been made available about which broadcasters will transmit the World Cup in 3D, apart from ESPN in America.

The BBC have announced that some of the 2010 Six Nations Rugby Union matches will also be available in 3D, however, this will only be available at certain cinemas with 3D projectors.

Sky 3D TV Locations:

BSkyB has fitted out nine pubs around the UK and Ireland with brand new 3D television; a new 47 inch LD920.

All Sky TV say is that four of the screenings will be in London, with two in Manchester and one each in Cardiff, Edinburgh and Dublin.
