Ferdinand Kayser, CCO at Luxembourg-based SES, speaking at IBC, said the satellite operator sees “steady momentum” and an accelerated uptake of Ultra-HD broadcasts leading to an expected 220 UHD channels over Europe by 2025.
Kayser was launching an SES ‘White Paper’ on UHD which confirmed that 2015 has seen a significant breakthrough with the number of channels either on air or about to launch. “Demos, content, high-technical standards, devices and the delivery infrastructure are now falling into place,” he added.

4k-Ultra-HD1

This represented a “virtuous circle” for UHD, and there would be two phases for UHD’s introduction. The industry was already in Phase 1 with more pixels, better codecs and a larger field of view. But this would be followed by Phase 2, starting in 2017 with “better pixels, higher dynamic range, a wider colour gamut, higher frame rates and better audio”.

Kayser said that UHD display sales were happily being bought by consumers, helped by rapidly falling prices, and would reach some 200 million units globally by 2018. “Buyers are already exposed to UHD content from the internet and movies, and we expect there will be more than 1000 channels on air by 2025.”

This morning the remaining channels on Eutelsat 28A were moved to the new Astra 2G satellite.

The channels were previously on a “European beam” with easy to receive coverage over most of Europe.
With their move to Astra 2, they have been placed on the UK spot beam, meaning some viewers in southern Europe may have lost these channels as their dish is not large enough to receive them on their new beam.

There is no indication as to whether this move to the UK beam is a temporary or permanent move.

Earlier today the last few remaining frequencies from the old Eutelsat 28A satellite were moved to the three new Astra 2 satellites.

This also meant a move for the Freesat Electronic Programme Guide data stream.

These latest moves are to remove channels from the aging Eutelsat satellite, which has been in orbit since 2001.

There have been reports that one of the old UK TV satellites, Eutelsat 28A, is operating on very low power levels.

This low power has affected reception of some Sky and Freesat channels on the Eutelsat 28A satellite.

Over the past week, reception problems occurred on some Sky and Freesat channels, including ESPN HD, CBS Reality, Bonanza Bonanza and Bloomberg.

Astra has premiered an Ultra HD demonstration channel for UK and Ireland. The simulcast of the existing demo channel for continental Europe is being broadcast from 28.2 degrees East.

“We are delighted to have set up this demonstration channel at the prime orbital position for the UK market,” said Mike Chandler, managing director of ASTRA (GB) Ltd, SES’s subsidiary in the UK. “We are making use of the capacity to enable UK and Irish retailers, installers and enthusiasts to understand the technology that makes UHD possible, and what it will mean for their viewing experience. We encourage our trade partners to show our Ultra HD demo channel at their points of sale for demonstration purposes.”

The channel features a mix of colourful and extremely detailed scenes that demonstrate the clarity of Ultra HD television – urban sports, exotic animals and nature, cityscapes – along with footage of SES’s headquarters in Betzdorf. It can be received with a standard satellite dish connected to a state-of-the-art Ultra HD flat screen TV featuring an integrated satellite tuner and HEVC decoder.

Earlier this week, a number of Sky pay channels, that were on the aging Astra 2A satellite, were moved to the Astra 2E satellite.

This is presumably as Astra 2A is nearing the end of its useful life.

This was a straight swap of channels form one satellite to another.

Channels have stayed on the same frequencies, so no changes are required by anyone- even though Sky digiboxes would make the changes automatically anyway!

Viewers in Spain may notice that some channels, that were previously on Astra 2As north beam and used to be unavailable mid to late afternoon, may not be available all day, now they are on Astra 2Es European beam.

The list of channels affected are listed below (data from the kingosat.com)

Astra 2G, the third and final new UK TV satellite is expected to launch from Baikonur on the 28th November 2014.

Astra 2G will replace the aging Astra 2A satellite, and will mean some reception changes for the affected Sky channels, for people in Spain and other areas of Europe.

This week the Astra 2G satellite was flown from France to Kazakhstan this week for pre-launch testing and fuelling.

However, the giant Russian Antonov aircraft carrying Astra 2G satellite to the Baikonur Cosmodrome was forced to make an emergency landing around 3am (GMT) October 28th at a remote airfield with a failed engine.

The aircraft engineers said the aircraft’s engine would be repaired and the flight resumed within a matter of hours.

The satellite, built by Airbus of France, is in a sealed, climate controlled, transportation container.

The owners of the aircraft, the Volga-Dnepr Group, say the valuable cargo was not damaged during the landing. However, sources at satellite owner SES suggest that the satellite has yet to be examined and expressed concern as to whether the inspection could take place at Baikonur, or whether the craft would have to be returned to Airbus for a full – and time-consuming – examination. This may delay the proposed launch on November 27th.

Below is a list of the channels and frequencies affected by the recent “satellite shuffle” between Eutelsat 28A and Astra.

Note that for some people in some areas of Spain, channels on the Astra 2F UK beam may be unavailable, as your satellite dish may be too small to receive these frequencies.

As a general rule of thumb, if you can receive Channel Five, then you should be able to receive those other channels on Astra 2Fs UK beam.

If you are struggling to receive those channels on the Astra 2F UK beam, then it may be possible to search for the channels on their “Final” frequencies, as some of the channels are actually operating on their final frequencies.

On a Sky box, you simply go to the “Add Channels” menu option, and then add the channels to your Sky boxes “Other Channels” list, accessed via the Services Menu.

Hopefully by the 10th October, all channels will be on their final frequencies, and the Sky Guide and the Freesat Guide channel lists are all correctly “mapped” to the new frequencies.

These changes have nothing to do with the new UK TV satellite, Astra 2E, that was recenctly launched and expected to be operational late November / December 2013.
