High Court approves Premier League crackdown on Kodi streaming piracy

Football fans who watch live matches for free via popular Kodi set-top boxes face a crackdown after the High Court approved a Premier League effort to shut down unlicensed streams online.

Mr Justice Arnold approved an order for Britain’s top four broadband providers BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media to block connections to the servers that host pirated streams of matches.

The Premier League is acting with the support of Sky and BT, which each pay millions for every match they broadcast and fear the popularity of Kodi boxes is eroding the value of their spending on exclusive rights. The rivals are paying a total of £5.1bn over three years to show top-flight domestic matches.

Audio Problem on BBC One HD during Boxing Days MOTD

Football fans went into meltdown on Boxing Day evening when a fault resulted in Match of the Day going on-air without sound on BBC One HD.

The fault appeared to primarily affect the version of BBC One HD broadcast to England, although BBC One HD in Scotland reportedly had a shorter-lived audio fault earlier in the programme. Viewers were able to watch the football highlights with sound by switching to BBC One standard definition. Satellite viewers also had the option to switch to other variants of BBC One HD aimed at viewers outside of England.

BBC outlines TV football coverage for 2016 / 17 season

The BBC has outlined its football coverage on TV for the coming season, with a new mid-week Premier League magazine programme and an extended Football Focus on Saturday.

Devoid of much in the way of live football coverage, beyond the FA Cup and a selection of Women’s Football fixtures, the BBC is looking to enhance its highlights and analysis output, with Gabby Logan to present a new mid-week Premier League Show, featuring in depth interviews with the biggest Premier League stars from its home at the National Football Museum in Manchester. On a regular basis, Gary Lineker will front a standalone feature as part of the programme on football’s hottest topics. The Premier League Show will start on Thursday 25th August on BBC Two.

Match of the Day future in doubt as ITV plan Premier League rights bid
ITV is expected to place a significant bid for the Premier League highlights rights for the 2016-19 seasons in the New Year, putting the future of Match of the Day in doubt.

Reports suggest ITV is set to launch a raid on Match of the Day’s rights to top-flight highlights as broadcasters gear up for the Premier League auction despite a recent intervention from the media regulator.

The 2016-19 season package is expected to sell for more than the £180 million paid by the BBC last time.

Match of the Day recently celebrated its 50th anniversary on the BBC, and it remains a ratings hit for the corporation with Gary Lineker as its main host.

The prospect of the BBC and ITV facing off for the highlights is just one subplot for in a Premier League rights battle that will again see Sky and BT Sport competing go head to head for live games. It is not expected to be derailed by the investigation announced by Ofcom this week.

The BBC paid £60m per year to retain the rights under the current deal, which runs to the end of next season. That helped the Premier League to a record £5.5bn in broadcasting income over three years, fuelled by a bidding war between BT Sport and Sky that boosted the income from its domestic rights by 70% to £3bn.

The live rights to Premier League football are expected to remain on BT Sport and Sky Sports, who will also be going head-to-head in a bidding war for the 2016-19 season rights in the New Year.
