High Court approves Premier League crackdown on Kodi streaming piracy

Football fans who watch live matches for free via popular Kodi set-top boxes face a crackdown after the High Court approved a Premier League effort to shut down unlicensed streams online.

Mr Justice Arnold approved an order for Britain’s top four broadband providers BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin Media to block connections to the servers that host pirated streams of matches.

The Premier League is acting with the support of Sky and BT, which each pay millions for every match they broadcast and fear the popularity of Kodi boxes is eroding the value of their spending on exclusive rights. The rivals are paying a total of £5.1bn over three years to show top-flight domestic matches.

Premier League in anti-piracy drive

The English Premier League has signed a new partnership with media protection company Irdeto in the latest move by the top division of English football to protect its intellectual property.

Irdeto will work with the Premier League in a number of areas, including a specific programme to investigate the illegal supply of set-top boxes that allow commercial organisations – including pubs and bars in the UK and overseas – to receive illegal streams of Premier League matches.

The League said the intelligence that Irdeto will provide will enhance its ability to obtain the evidence required to take legal action against suppliers of systems that allow illegal broadcasting of games.

The partnership will also allow the League, working closely with law enforcement organisations worldwide, to pursue actions against the criminal networks that are involved in the distribution of these illegal services.

The Premier League said Irdeto’s international presence will bring a “new dimension” to its anti-piracy work by allowing the League to target illegal suppliers in countries other than the UK.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore added: “It is only through legitimate investment in our broadcasting rights that we can put on a high quality football competition, and support and invest in all levels of English football and beyond.

“Piracy threatens that model and we are confident that our partnership with Irdeto – who have a proven track record in this area – will allow us to evolve and improve the way we guard against that threat for years to come.”

The BBC has today announced details of its Wimbledon 2014 coverage.

The 2014 tournament takes place from June 23 to July 6, with coverage on BBC television, radio and digital.

Sue Barker will once again lead the TV coverage of BBC One and Two, while Clare Balding will present on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Reigning Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli and British number one Laura Robson have signed up to join the BBC’s Wimbledon commentary team.

Bartoli announced her retirement from the game last summer, while Robson is not playing due to wrist surgery.

Boris Becker is off the team this year, as the BBC says that he will be busy coaching after signing up to become head coach for Novak Djokovic.

Bartoli and Robson will join regulars such as Tim Henman, John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova, who made her debut on the commentary team in 2013.

Presenter John Inverdale, who has been replaced by Clare Balding as the host of Radio 5 Live’s Wimbledon coverage, returns to present Today at Wimbledon on BBC2.

The BBC said it would air 150 hours of TV coverage, more than ever before, with coverage beginning on 23 June.

The BBC is to offer up to 12 live streams of coverage from Wimbledon, giving the annual event its most comprehensive coverage yet.

Viewers with connected TVs will be able to access the 12 HD streams with the BBC Sport App, available via the Connected Red Button. This includes viewers with the latest models of Freeview HD smart TVs and those with Virgin’s TiVo service. The BBC Sport App is also available on Freesat Freetime receivers. The availability of the streams in HD will depend on viewer’s broadband connections.

Via conventional means, the BBC will broadcast up to 5 red button streams, which are being created on terrestrial (for Freeview/YouView receivers), on cable and on satellite (Sky/Freesat receivers) to provide extra coverage of events through until the end of the Commonwealth Games in early August.

Temporary red button streams first appeared last week on satellite ()

Before the tournament, a replay of Murray’s win over Novak Djokovic last year will be aired on Saturday, June 21 at 10.15am on BBC Two. A review of the 2013 tournament will be broadcast the following day at 11am.

BBC Radio 5 Live will replay The Day We Won Wimbledon, a documentary about Andy Murray’s victory, narrated by John Hurt, on June 21 at 11am.

On BBC One, When Andy Won Wimbledon will document Murray’s year since winning the Grand Slam at 10.35pm on June 23.
