Sky Sports is the brand name for a group of sports channels operated by the Sky TV in the UK. During the years, and the move to digital TV, the service has grown from a single channel, to currently operating seven sports channels.
Sky Sports F1 is a channel dedicated to Formula One, but does also show content from other motor sports.
In previous F1 seasons, the BBC broadcast all F1 race weekends live. But with rising costs, and the need to find savings, the BBC negotiated its deal. On the 29th July 2011 a new broadcast rights deal was announced, where Sky Sports would cover all race weekends live, with the BBC now covering half of the race weekends live, with highlights of all other races. Sky Sports F1 channel, a channel dedicated to F1, was launched on the 9th March 2012. The channel also covers the GP2 and GP3 race series.
One of the main features of Sky Sports F1 is their Sky Race Control, available via the red button during race coverage. Sky Race Control features additional coverage including official Formula One timing, race driver trackers, and 3 onboard camera feeds alternating between certain drivers.
Sky Sports F1 channel is encrypted and requires a Sky viewing card, and a Sky Sports subscription package.
The Sky Sports F1 channel is classed as “premium channels”, and can only be watched when using a Sky viewing card in the correctly paired Sky digibox. When trying to watch a Sky Sports channel, using the viewing card in the wrong Sky digibox, you will receive the “Wrong card for this set top box “ on screen error message.
