Possible HD Channel Frequency Changes
On a few satellite related forums there are rumours and speculation that there will soon be a change in some of the HD channels (BBC HD, ITV HD and C4 HD) frequencies, which will affect reception, especially for those watching ITVHD and C4 HD on a small (ie non 1.8 / 1.9m) satellite dish.
Currently all three channels sit on different frequencies across three satellites. However, a recent development in encoding has meant that it is possible to have a few HD channels on one frequency.
With this in mind there has been, over the last few weeks, a HD test signal using this newer encoder, which compresses the HD signals more effectivly, meaning more HD channels can be placed onto one frequency.
Speculation is that:
BBC HD will remain on the same frequency.
The two BBC1 regions (East and Channel Islands) that currently share the same frequency as BBCHD will move to another BBC frequency – possibly meaning that BBC CI will no longer be a strong alternative frequency to change to.
Both ITV HD and C4 HD services move to the BBC HD frequency – meaning all the main Freesat HD channels are all on the same frequency.
This would also allow ITV to start to broadcast more HD content – and maybe move to an actual HD channels and not the “red button” extra service currentl in operation.
Obviously this will mean that you will not be able to receive ITVHD or C4 HD on a small dish, as their new reception availability would be the same as that of BBC HD.
Again, this is currently speculation and rumour, and so be wary of companies that are promsing you ITVHD and C4HD on a small dish – it may not last for long.
