Netflix account sharing update
Netflix is looking at ways of clamping down on account sharing, or at least make some more money from it, according to recent reports.
Netflix accounts should, according to their terms and conditions, only be shared with within their household.
However Netflix currently testing plans that will allow users to share their accounts and password more easily and securely, at a price.
Chengyi Long, Director, Product Innovation, Netflix says password sharing is affecting Netflix’s ability to invest in content.
Netflix says
“We’ve been working on ways to enable members who share outside their household to do so easily and securely, while also paying a bit more. And over the next few weeks, we’ll launch and test two new features for our members in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru.”
These tests will allow Netflix users to choose from two options:
1 – Add an extra member on standard and premium Netflix plans – allowing users to continue their current password sharing arrangements “official” for a price.
2 – Transfer to new standalone basic, standard or premium account.
This will impact many people and families who share accounts, especially those here in Spain that use UK family members accounts.
The only way i can think of how Netflix will do this will be down to IP address monitoring. But this may be complicated as mobile devices connected via mobile data will log a different IP address to that used at home, so could flag up false positives.
