ITV SD Channel Closures January 2024 Explained
In January 2024, ITV will begin a major shift in how its channels are delivered via satellite, with several standard definition (SD) channels set to close as part of a wider move towards high definition (HD) broadcasting. This change will form part of an industry-wide transition, following similar moves by the BBC, as broadcasters look to improve picture quality and make more efficient use of limited satellite capacity.
The initial phase of ITV’s changes is expected to include the closure of SD versions of channels such as ITV3, ITV4, and ITVBe, alongside adjustments to regional ITV1 services. ITV will also begin reorganising its satellite frequencies, preparing for a future where HD becomes the default format across all its channels.
The move will come just days after the BBC completes its own SD channel switch-off, marking a significant moment in the UK’s transition away from older TV formats.
For viewers, particularly those using older Sky or Freesat receivers, this change may have a noticeable impact. SD-only boxes could lose access to certain channels, meaning some households may find parts of the ITV lineup disappearing unless they upgrade their equipment.
This transition reflects a broader trend across UK television, where SD broadcasting is gradually being phased out. By moving to HD-only services, broadcasters can deliver better picture and sound quality while freeing up bandwidth for additional services and future upgrades.
While most modern TV equipment should handle these changes automatically, those with older setups may need to upgrade to continue receiving all channels.
(No mention of ITV2 SD, or the +1 SD services in the ITV press release)
So if you have an old grey Sky or Sky+ digibox, you will lose access to these channels on the 9th January 2024.
These three ITV channel closures are in addition to the four ITV1 SD regions that are closing: Border Scotland, Channel, UTV (Northern Ireland) and ITV1 Wales SD.
If you live outside the UK, and you are watching these channels on a HD box in SD as you are unable to receive the HD signals, then you will need to either have your satellite dish system realigned, or have a larger satellite dish installed.
In my service area a 125x135cm satellite dish has been the recommended size of satellite dish since 2012, and will receive these HD signals in all but the heaviest of rains.
The closure of these SD ITV channels is one day after the BBC closes its SD channels.
Timeline: UK SD Channel Switch-Off (BBC & ITV)
The move away from standard definition TV in the UK is happening in stages, with major broadcasters transitioning to HD-only services within days of each other.
December 2023
The BBC begins shutting down its remaining SD satellite channels, completing its transition to HD-only broadcasting for most services.
Early January 2024
ITV announces and prepares for its own SD channel closures, following closely behind the BBC’s switch-off.
January 2024
ITV plc starts closing SD versions of key channels including ITV3, ITV4, and ITVBe, while also making changes to regional ITV1 services and satellite frequencies.
Throughout 2024 and beyond
The wider UK TV industry continues moving toward HD-only (and eventually UHD) broadcasting, with SD expected to be phased out completely across satellite platforms.
With both the BBC and ITV moving away from SD within such a short timeframe, viewers using older equipment will be the most affected.
- SD-only Sky and Freesat boxes may lose multiple channels
- HD-compatible devices should continue working normally
- A simple upgrade to an HD receiver will restore access
