SportyStuff TV to cease broadcasting on UK TV end of March
SportyStuff TV, the UK free-to-air sports channel that has entertained fans of alternative and grassroots sports for over a decade, is set to cease broadcasting at the end of March 2024. The announcement marks the end of a 12-year journey for a channel that carved out a niche in a crowded sports television landscape by showcasing programming often ignored by mainstream broadcasters.
Launched in 2011 originally as Greyhound TV Limited and later rebranded, SportyStuff TV became a familiar name for viewers looking to watch live and recorded coverage of sports such as greyhound racing, motorsports and other specialist events that weren’t widely available on traditional channels. It quickly gained traction with audiences on platforms including Freesat, Freeview (Channelbox) and Sky TV, offering free access to sports content beyond the major leagues and televised competitions.
The channel’s focus on live greyhound racing brought back to TV screens a sport with a loyal but underserved fanbase, filling a gap left by the removal of other sports channels from platforms like Freesat. Viewers also enjoyed motorsports highlights and coverage of less mainstream competitions that appealed to enthusiasts of niche athletic pursuits.
Despite reporting that 2023 was its most successful year of trading, operators of SportyStuff TV cited “external circumstances beyond our control” as the reason for the decision to close down at midnight on 31 March 2024. The channel’s chairman and CEO expressed pride in the accomplishments of the team over the years and gratitude to production staff, presenters and loyal viewers who supported the broadcaster throughout its run.
The closure is being felt by fans across the UK who appreciated having a free sports channel outside the mainstream offerings. For many, SportyStuff TV wasn’t just another channel — it was an opportunity to watch sports rarely seen on conventional free channels and a platform that gave airtime to events and competitions with passionate followings.
Although the broadcast will end, discussions within the industry hint at possible efforts to revive or rehouse SportyStuff TV under new arrangements, with interested parties exploring ways to continue supporting the types of sport it championed. For now, viewers will remember SportyStuff TV as an ambitious broadcaster that served a unique corner of the sports community during its 12-year run.
