Womans Champions League rights move to Disney+
Starting with the 2025–26 season, the UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) will be broadcast live on Disney+ across Europe, including Spain, under a new five-year agreement running through 2030. This marks a significant shift from DAZN, the current rights holder, and represents Disney’s first major move into European women’s football broadcasting.
Under this deal, Disney+ subscribers will have access to all 75 matches per season at no additional cost, with ESPN, Disney’s sports brand, handling production. To enhance accessibility, one match per week will also be broadcast free-to-air in over 30 countries—including Spain via RTVE—through a partnership with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
The competition itself will undergo a format change, expanding from a 16-team group stage to an 18-team league phase followed by playoffs. This new structure aims to increase the competition’s reach, with UEFA estimating that the final could be broadcast to over 200 million households across Europe.
While the move to Disney+ promises enhanced production quality and broader coverage, it also raises concerns about the proliferation of subscription services for fans. In the UK, for example, women’s football will now be spread across six different broadcasters, potentially increasing costs for viewers.
In the UK broadcasting landscape, Disney’s entry marks the sixth major platform to cover women’s football from next season. The Women’s Super League is currently shared between the BBC and Sky Sports, while TNT Sports and Channel 4 have recently struck a deal to air the Women’s FA Cup. ITV broadcasts matches featuring the England women’s national team, with the BBC also providing coverage during major tournaments.
The final match under DAZN’s current contract will feature Arsenal facing reigning champions Barcelona in Lisbon. Looking ahead, English clubs Chelsea, Arsenal, and Manchester United have already secured their spots in the revamped competition, with Arsenal aiming to replicate their 2007 title win—the only British women’s club to have claimed the European crown.
