Vintage TV, specialising in older music videos and performances has been removed from Freesat, the free-to-air satellite service.

Vintage TV was previously available on Freesat channel number 505.

Vintage TV is staying tight-lipped about the changes, but viewers with Freesat can currently still access Vintage TV using the manual tuning function on their Freesat boxes (technical parameters below).

The BBC will be stopping support, and therefore stopping an early version of the BBC iPlayer app on quite a lot of Freesat set top boxes.

This will happen in September 2016.

The Freesat models affected are those that are without the Freetime label.

If your version of iPlayer looks like this then you’re going to be affected:

How to set up a Freesat Humax HDR 1100S with Freetime

Video to show the process for a first time installations for the Freesat Humax HDR 1100S with Freetime.

Freetime allows you to “roll back” the programme guide, and use the Catch Up TV services like BBC iPlayer, to watch programmes you may have missed.

If you try to use the UK TV iPlayer Catch-up TV services on a Freesat set top box or a Sky+HD digibox in Spain from a country other than the UK and ROI, you will be blocked from viewing content. Your Spanish IP address will be blocked, so UK TV iPlayer Catch-up TV content will NOT be available to you on your Freesat set top box or a Sky+HD digibox in Spain. This is because the UK TV iPlayer Catch-up TV content will only be made available to users connecting to the internet using a UK server. Using a VPN UK server, and a UK IP address, this “tricks” the UK TV iPlayer Catch-up TV services into thinking you are connecting from the UK, and not connecting from Spain.

We regularly contribute to a local Javea publication, the Javea Grapevine, with the latest news, and views with regards to satellite TV and reception of UK TV in Javea.

This was an article in the June publication.

Terminology

You may have often heard about Freeview, Freesat, Free to air and free to view. But do you know what they mean? Many people and even some satellite installers are often confused about their meaning, and can mean people buying the wrong type of equipment.

Freeview is the name of the consortium that operated the UK’s digital terrestrial TV service. It is transmitted from land based masts, and received by a TV aerial. Freeview IS NOT available in Spain. The Freeview signals simply do not reach into Spain. Freeview is not available via a satellite dish. You cannot connect a Freeview box to a satellite dish and expect to watch UK TV – they are two different incompatible systems.

Spain does not have an equivalent of Freeview (the consortium), but it does have a digital terrestrial TV service – TDT. It offers about 40 channels via a TV aerial, and has the bonus where most UK and USA imported programmes have their original English audio available as well as the “dubbed” Spanish audio.

Freesat is the name of the satellite TV service which offers access to the free TV channels, many of which are on Freeview. Freesat is only available on official Freesat receivers. You cannot get Freesat on a Sky box, although the channels on Freesat are also available on a Sky box (even with no viewing card).

Free to air channels are channels that are available free of encryption (so no viewing card is required) and subscription free. They are available on Freesat and Sky boxes. Examples include BBC channels.

Free to view is not “Freeview”. Free to view channels are channels that encrypted (so a viewing card is required) but are subscription free. Free to view channels are not available on Freesat. They are available on a Sky box. Examples include Sony Movies, Motors TV and LFCTV.

Why do I mention this? Well I often hear of people saying “bring a Freeview box to Spain and use it on your dish to get channels” and “connect your Freeview box to your dish” and “you can get Freeview in Spain”. Over the years I have been called out to people who, based on what they have heard and understood, have brought a Freeview box to Spain and confused as to why a) it will not work with a satellite dish, and b) it only gets Spanish TV channels and no UK channels!

End of cheap (and illegal) Sky TV?

Some installers have been selling systems that can access the full Sky TV package, for a lot less than the official Sky monthly charges. They do this by selling access to illegal cardsharing systems. A satellite receiver, usually an Iberosat or Ariva, is connected via the internet to a server that provides the access codes to unlock the Sky TV channels.

Obviously illegal, but probably not mentioned by the installer.

However, recently if you are using such systems you will have noticed that about a dozen Sky HD channels are no longer available via this system – Sky One HD being one such channel.

It is expected over the coming months ALL Sky HD channels, and maybe even the SD Sport and Movie channels, will have their encryption upgraded, meaning these channels are no longer available on cardsharing systems.

This is because Sky, and other pay TV providers, have been upgrading their encryption software to prevent their channels being access via cardsharing. The only way to continually access these channels via satellite would be using a Sky Digibox and a Sky viewing card with a monthly subscription.

Reception information and how to receive Sky TV Pego Freesat TV Pego and UK TV Pego

Sky TV Pego. Sky TV Installers Pego. Sky Pego

If you want to receive Sky TV Pego or Freesat TV Pego or in the surrounding areas, then you will need to have a satellite dish installed.

Depending on what UK TV channels you want to receive will determine the size of the satellite dish you need to install.

Prior to 2012, the main UK TV channels on Sky and Freesat required a large 1.8m or 2.4m satellite dish. This was because these channels were transmitted from the Astra 2D satellite, whose signal reception in Pego Spain, was low, and therefore the need for large satellite dishes such as a Marraffa 1.8m satellite dish, or a Famaval 1.8m / 1.9m satellite dish, or a Famaval 2.4m satellite dish to be installed.

Since February 2012, it has been possible to receive UK TV channels via Sky TV and Freesat TV (including BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC4, BBC News, ITV1, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, Channel 4, E4, More 4, Film 4, Five, Five*, Five USA and many more UK TV channels) on a small satellite dish in Pego.
This is because these channels have been transmitting from the temporary Astra 1N, and the new Astra 2F satellites, whose reception in Pego is a lot better than when these channels were transmitting from the previous Astra 2D satellite.

Since February 2014, the main UK TV satellite channels, (BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC4, BBC News, ITV1, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, Channel 4, E4, More 4, Film 4)
moved from their temporary satellite, Astra 1N, to their new permanent Astra satellite, Astra 2E. Astra 2E is slightly weaker than the first new UK TV satellite, and so a 1m (90x100cm) satellite dish may be on the limits of reception. A larger 1.1m (100x110cm) satellite dish, or a “1.25/1.4m” (125x135cm)
satellite dish may be required for a more stable reception of the UK TV satellite signals in Pego.

All our satellite TV installations use the best performing equipment, from the best performing satellite dishes, to the best performing High Gain LNBs, like the Inverto Ultra Black single LNB, for the best reception of UK TV in Pego.

The price for the installation of a 90x100cm 1 metre satellite dish in Pego for UK TV Pego will cost 175 euros.

The price for the installation of a 100x110cm 1.1 metre satellite dish in Pego for UK TV Pego will cost 200 euros.

The price for the installation of a 125x135cm 1.25 / 1.4 metre satellite dish in Pego for UK TV Pego will cost 275 euros.

Other sizes of satellite dishes are also available to be installed in Pego, including :
