View Full Version : Losing BBC1 at 8.30pm - Help please.

2nd March 2011, 09:08 AM

I live in Urbanisation La Cala in Javea - near to the Cap de la nau lighthouse - well 2km away. We have a 2.4 dish with low loss cable and a Sky + box, and we pay for Sky subscription services.

Since last week we can't get BBC1 on any channel - W.Mids, East, Yorks etc - after 8.30 in the evening. We used to get it all night until 11.30ish.

Some one told us this is because BBC have weakened the signal and there is nothing we can do about it. Some one else said a SKY + HD box might be better, we have SKY + at the moment.

Any ideas please?

Hi and welcome,

The BBC have done nothing with the signals since they moved channels around their transponders last October / November. And technically the BBC cannot do anything in relation to "weakening" the siganls, as the signals on that particular satellite are pretty much fixed (when the satellite was made), and it is under control of the satellite operators, SES Astra, not the BBC (or Sky for that matter!)

It may mean your dish needs to be realigned, or the LNB to be replaced (more than liekly to be the former). The only issue that I cannot do anything about, is if there is any (local?) interferance from other transmissions....

Another suggestion is that at this time of year, the satellite is in "eclispe mode".

Basically the satellite goes into the Earth's shadow for a few hours, around March and October time. The satellite switches to battery power rather than solar and, supposeably the power output drops.
