Just got a dish for free and put it up, how do I align it properly

Ive just been given a dish for free and I have put it up. Its not tight yet so I can still move it, I just need to align it correctly. Is there any way I can do this effectively. I dont have a meter etc. Ive tried to copy the neighbours directions with no luck. Is it a case of putting the signal meter up on the sky box menus and moving the dish about, I suspect not.

Any ideas, or do I need to call someone out.

    Cheers

You can try and do it yourself.
But without a signal meter it will be tricky, and will not be accurate.

    Use
    http://www.satandpcguy.com/Site/Dishdirection.php
    to get a general direction.

But if you want to have a go:
make sure the sky box has its default transponder set to 12207
go to the signal test screen.
slowly move the dish until you see the signal.
When at its maximum tighten the nuts and bolts.

Then its trial and error to max the signal...

Remember a 1mm movement of the dish here on Earth can mean a large distance 36000kms up in space...where the satellites are located...hence small movements.

Copying another dish does not always work - are you sure that their dish is pointing towards the UK TV satellites? Copying it by eye and getting the correct direction is almost impossiable!!
