Sky+ box and no signal on one input.

    Hi There,

Problem with SKY+ box –First Time post

Forgive me if I have the posting to the wrong but I have a small problem with my Sky+ box – (NOT HD+) in Spain (Costa Blanca, near Pilar de la Horadada – Campoverde) ).
My problem is that I have had installed a 1m dish with two LNBs, I connected the SKY+ box to the two input cables from the LNBs but currently can only receive one input (No 2) as a result I am having trouble recording some programs. The signal strength indicator (on the SKY setup) does not show any signal strength on input one, but reasonable strength on input 2. Is there any way in which I can get the box to recognize the signal on input one as I have had the signal tested professionally and am advised (and saw the meter myself) that there is no problem with the signal from the LNBs to both cables.
I am also unable to get a seven day EP guide, only the current day.
Sorry if I am in the wrong place, if so can someone pl advise me how to post to the correct place.
    Robin

I think I know of this question from another site I help out on!

Sky+ boxes generally use input 1 for the channel you are watching and input 2 for the channel that is being recorded, unless you are recording the channel that is being watched.

Sky+ boxes also use input 1 to boot up. If there is no signal coming into input 1 then the sky box will not work, as it cannot download the Sky Guide.
As you are getting channels input 1 will be working, otherwise your box will not work at all as it will not be able to download the Sky Guide / Channel list!

The signal test screen on a Sky box is not reliable.
Input 1 tends to show the signal for the default transponder frequency
    This frequency is 11778 v.
(It makes no difference if you have changed this frequency, as the Sky box will use 11778 whenever you enter the menu system, as on 11778 is the sky boxes background music)
11778 is a weak signal. In many areas, even a 2.4m dish can not get this frequency 24/7, especialyl at around 6pm when it is at its weakest in Spain.
And it is perfectly understandable that a 1m dish will not get this 11778 frequency all day in your location.
Hence why the signal test screen can show no signal - as your dish is too small for your location to actually receive the signal that the screen is showing.

You can test to make sure both inputs are working OK. Go to a channel you can receive like Sky News, and record it, then go to another working channel and record it. Doing this will ensure that both inputs are working and are recording channels you can receive. If two recordings are in progress on two working channels, then the signal test screen should be populated with the signal of the two channels being recorded.

It depends on what the installer wanted you to see - was it the nice and strong signal used for a strong channels like Sky News, or did they try their best to maximise reception of a weak frequency like 11778 or sky channel 998. Simply showing there is a signal is not really a good test. Siganls come from 4 satellites, 7 beams, and each beam havng its own characteristics. Simply measuring one frequency is not really a decent enough check, you need to measure a full range of frequencies.

Along with the Sky Guide menu music 11778 also carries the data stream for the 7 dy sky guide information.
If you cannot receive 1778 you will not get 7 day Sky Guide information.
Your 1m dish in your location will not get 11778 all day, and maybe even not for the majority of the day, and so yu will not be able to receive the full 7 day Sky Guide information on 11778.
You will only get very basic "next 6 hours" information.

This could also be the reason why your planned recordings and series links are not working correctly, as the box is unable to update and get the data it needs for those planned recordings.

On Sky+ boxes you cannot force a signal through input 1 or input 2 only.
Sky+HD boxes you can only force it through input 1 - via single feed mode.

Hope this helps, but a tthe end of the day your problems are down to your location and dish size.
