ITV launches international pay platform for ITV progammes for expats

ITV is launching a new international service that will make it possible for ex-pats and holiday makers to watch their favourite soaps while abroad.

ITV Essentials will be available in 12 European territories for a monthly subscription of €5.49.

ITV Essentials will stream all episodes of Britain’s favourite soaps - Coronation Street and Emmerdale - without ads and will include a 30 day catch up window.

Which shows can I watch abroad?

Your subscription to ITV Essentials allows you to watch some of your favourite ITV shows like Coronation Street and Emmerdale in selected countries across Europe.

Which devices can I use?

At the moment ITV Essentials is only available on a desktop/laptop PC or Mac. It cannot be used on a mobile device such as a mobile phone or tablet.

Where can I watch ITV Essentials?

You can watch ITV Essentials in any of the following countries - regardless of where you originally signed up - Austria, Belgium, France, Greece, Gibraltar, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Spain.

Can I sign up in the UK but watch abroad?

Yes, we recommend it. Then you’re all set up and ready to go when you reach your destination. But check you have a compatible device and are subscribing to the right service for you. You might also want to check the following...

Is there anything I need to do before I go abroad?

Yes.

Pack your laptop or portable computer. You will not be able to watch ITV Essentials content on a mobile device (a phone or tablet). A dedicated app will be available very soon for iOS devices (iPad and iPhone)
Download Microsoft Silverlight before you go - you will need this installed on your computer to play the video and it may be quicker to do that at home.
You will need a WiFi internet connection abroad, so make sure you've got access planned!
Can I watch it on a tablet / iPad?

No. You can access the Essentials website but you cannot watch the content on a tablet or mobile. We’re currently working on a dedicated app for iPad and iPhone which will allow you to download the app, sign up at home and access abroad.

How do I pay and for how long?

You can pay by most major credit cards, which we will ask you for when you register. Once you are signed up, there are two ways to pay:

a monthly ongoing subscription called Living Abroad. If you sign up for this you will be charged each month on the same day. This is intended for customers who live abroad and want the ease of having their subscription renew automatically.
a Holiday Pass which entitles you to 30 days of access to the ITV Essentials service. Perfect if you’re going abroad for less than a month but want to keep up with the ITV shows you love!
Do I need a separate subscription for each programme?

No! ITV Essentials entitles you to all the programmes in the service.

Is it legal?

100%! ITV Essentials is brought to you by ITV and it’s completely legal to use, unlike some other international streaming or download sites.

Will I get my shows on the same day as my pals back home?

You will! We aim to have all of our shows available on ITV Essentials the same day as broadcast and we aim to have Coronation Street and Emmerdale available at the same time as they’re being broadcast in the UK.

I can’t find this evening’s Coronation Street / Emmerdale - where is it?

While we try to bring you programmes at roughly the same time they broadcast in the UK, there’s sometimes a slight delay. Please check again in a little while.

Can I use ITV Essentials in the UK?

No. You can only use ITV Essentials in certain countries in Europe. But you can catch up for free with most ITV programmes on the ITV Player - just go to itv.com/player.

Why isn’t ITV Essentials available in my country?

Sometimes there are reasons why we can't make our content available in all countries - often for technical or legal reasons. However that doesn’t mean it will never be available in your country.

I already subscribe to ITV Premium - do I have to take out a separate subscription for ITV Essentials?

Yes. ITV Essentials is an ITV service allowing you to watch selected soaps and daytime programmes outside the UK. ITV Premium allows you to watch ITV Player without the ads in the UK.

I have taken out a 30-day pass but I’ve decided to stay abroad. Can I upgrade my pass to a subscription?

Lucky you! Yes you can. Sign in as normal, go to Account on the top right of the screen and click on Account Details. Click on Manage Subscription and providing you have the 30 days package, you will see a button to Subscribe to an ongoing subscription. Click on this button and follow the steps to complete the process. Your monthly billing will then start once your original 30 days package has expired.

I've started watching a programme abroad. Can I continue watching in the UK on my return?

No, you can’t use ITV Essentials in the UK. It is likely that you’ll be able to find it on ITV Player though, so have a look at itv.com/player.

Why do I have to pay in Euros?

ITV Essentials only works in Europe so the price is set in Euros. If you are purchasing from the UK you will be charged at a current exchange rate determined by your bank. Additional charges may apply.

Can I use mobile data abroad to watch videos?

No. A WiFi or direct internet connection is required.

Can I download programmes to watch offline?

At the moment, it is not possible to download programmes to watch offline, however, we are always listening to our viewers comments and feedback and will continue to explore ways in which to develop our player.

Does the pass/subscription I pay for ITV Essentials cover internet/mobile or WiFi charges abroad?

No. ITV Essentials subscription does not cover the cost of internet connection. Make sure you know how you are paying for your internet usage before you enjoy hours of Corrie or Emmerdale abroad - it can get expensive if you haven’t planned ahead!

Why can’t I get back to the home page when I’m viewing my card details

This is for added security. The Service is PCI compliant which means that we handle all payment details in a secure environment. Due to these restrictions we do not add a link to the homepage when user is viewing their card details. To navigate to the home page, simply press the 'back' button and click on the logo.
