Spain's first partial analogue switch off took place over the weekend in twelve regions. The national government stated that "the different phases of the national switch off taking place next April 2010 are being fulfilled,” according to Francisco Ros Secretary of State for Telecommunications and the Information Society.
Ros also stated that despite Spaniards tendency to leave tasks until the last minute, the figures reflect that citizens are responding "very well" to the digital transition because eight out of ten homes are already receiving digital signals. Moreover Ros declared that analogue switch off will not be noticable for most. "Just three or four per cent of the population will notice the analogue switch off. Those are the people still watching analogue television," he said.
National digital coverage will soon reach 100% of the national territory since the satellite technology will allow it to reach difficult areas, especially rural areas.
