    Satellite TV query - Madrid

    Hi, everyone,
I'm new to this forum and so new to satellite TV I haven't even got a dish or a set-top box! I asked a local aerial/satellite TV specialist for a quote to rig a new satellite set up here (outside Madrid) to receive BBC/ITV/Channel 4 and/or other entertainment channels in English and French, specifying that I did not want the stale old Digital+ offer of BBC World, CNN, CNBC, Fox, Euronews, France 24, Bloomberg, Skynews and Arte. Unfortunately, this was precisely what they offered me, kindly faxing me a full list of the available channels for private individuals (with over 80 channels in German), so I asked if this was a problem of the satellite, the size of dish (they proposed 60cm) the amplifier or some other technical limitation, but the salesgirl seemed to be at the very limit of her knowledge, so I decided I had to post a query for help or speak to someone on this forum.
What I and my (French-speaking) wife want is to receive at least a couple of channels in our respective languages offering comedy series, films, documentaries, sports, travel and similar entertainment. We don't need 300 channels. We don't need more than a couple of news channels apiece. We DO need quality and we'd like the standard BBC1, 2, ITV, Channel 4 type of material, if possible.
Could you please provide details of the dish size and orientation, the decoder or set-top box and any other pertinent info. I realise this is not the Costa Blanca, but I'm sure your technical knowhow will help us out.

    Many thanks

    Hi,

What your installer has done is align the dish to Astra 1 at 19 degrees - which is one of the satellite groups that provides TV for Many european countries.

UK TV comes from the Astra 2 satellites located at 28 degrees.

A 60cm dish is totally inadequate. Although not 100% sure a dish of 1.45m may well suffice for the main BBC and ITVs, but maybe even a 1.8m dish may be required.
    try skyinmadrid.com
i do not know of him or what his work is like but looks like he knows what he is talking about.

An 60-80cm dish may be required on astra 1 for the French channel - you will need a TNT box and a card, and this gives around 20 French digital channels for a one off payment.

    Hi

Not too sure that an 80cm dish in Madrid will get you all channels, as according to this from the skyinmadrid site

you just about get most channels 24/7 on a 120cm dish - even then the weaker BBC2,3,4s will not be available 24/7.

I suppose it will depend on where in Madrid you are, but even then I would think the weaker Astra2d channels (BBC2,3,4) would not be available 24/7 on an 80cm dish.

    From a installer in Madrid.
"You won't get BBC 2, 3, 4 or Film Four in the evenings in Madrid on a 1.5m dish."
"The difference between a 1.2m and 1.5 m in Madrid is a few extra BBC 2 hours until around 8pm at best, very patchy thereafter. BBC One and ITV will be more solid on a 1.5m, with less rain fade. "
"final result depends on where you are in Madrid. South- west is worse for BBC 2, around the M50 up to Torrelodones.
North- east is better, once you get north of Santo Domingo on the A1 and into the sierra, BBC can be had 24 hours on a 1.8m in winter."
