The Guardia Civil has declared that they will be carrying out 300,000 breathalyser tests till December 20 in a bid to contain the drunken drivers. 20,000 tests will be conducted at 1000 points on the road network everyday. The body also said that they will focus especially on people who drive after Christmas lunches and dinner with friends.

The traffic authorities reminded that alcohol multiplies the chances of accidents, putting the life of self and others in danger as drinking causes emotional excitability, euphoria, loss of precise control of movements and makes focusing difficult.

The concern of the traffic authorities is confirmed with the fact that during the last drunken-driving campaign in July, a little over 3% drivers were tested positive for alcohol, but more than 30% of drivers killed in accidents were found to have consumed more alcohol than the prescribed limit of 0.3 grams per liter.
