3D TV on Satellite in 2010

BSkyB has made clear its proposed 3D television service will be compatible with a range of ‘3D Ready’ televisions manufactured by LG, Panasonic, Samsung and Sony.

The four manufacturers are expected to use CES in Las Vegas to signal their intention to bring ‘3D Ready’ television displays to the market later this year. In a statement Sky said its 3D service would be “compatible with a wide range of 3D Ready TVs being launched in the UK and Ireland during 2010”. These include the LG, Panasonic, Samsung and Sony products.

Stephen Gater, head of marketing, Home Entertainment, LG Electronics UK, said we were witnessing the beginning of a change in how TV is viewed. “This year will see LG’s first 3D Ready TVs hit the market – and through Sky’s clear commitment to 3D broadcasting, 3D in the home is set to become a reality.”

A number of differing formats are emerging, in both transmission and display formats, ahead of final decisions by regulators and standards bodies. In the United States one of the largest white label display manufacturers, Vizio, has chosen the Sensio proprietary side-by-side format. However, Sony, Samsung and JVC/Panasonic have all opted for the rival RealD system. LG is yet to publically declare its support for either system and the manufacturer could simply run regular side-by-side without any proprietary elements. Both Sensio and RealD are claiming intellectual property rights over their use of the side-by-side format and proprietary encoding.

Side-by-side is key for Sky because it allows the satcaster to use the existing Sky+ HD receivers of which over 1.6 million units have already been deployed.

Sky plans to launch the UK’s first 3D service during 2010, most likely as a pay-per-view channel, joining recently announced ventures in the US from Discovery Channel and ESPN.

American TV network ESPN is to show football matches in 3D during this year's World Cup in South Africa.

The US sports broadcaster, which won rights to show Premier League games in Britain after the collapse of Setanta last summer, said that it would debut its 3D television system during a World Cup match between the hosts and Mexico on 11 June.

Twenty-four other matches during the competition will also be shown in 3D, which will require viewers to wear special glasses. The company did not say whether viewers in the UK would, or how it planned to make the technology available to its subscribers in the United States.

The system, which relies on a network of cameras and entirely separate staff, has been in trials for the past year.

Panasonic unveiled a massive 152” all-3D (full 3D), all HDTV, plasma display at CES...

...but at a price likely to need a second mortgage and a need to call in builders to strengthen walls and floors to support this beast.

It uses Panasonic's newly developed, super-efficient, quadruple luminous efficiency technology. Panel illuminating speed is ultra-rapid and this feature allows the 152-inch screen to display high-quality, rapid, 3D content in a resolution of 4,096 x 2,160 pixels (4k x 2k), which is four times the full-HD specification (1,920 x 1,080). Contrast ratio speeds of 5,000,000:1 are claimed.

Panasonic has not unveiled the price just yet.

Sky has sealed a strategic partnership deal with 3ality Digital to use the firm's production technology and equipment for its forthcoming 3D TV channel.

Under the arrangement, Sky will utilise 3ality's state-of-the-art 3D camera rigs and image processors for producing the channel's entertainment, sport, factual and arts content.

The firm's 3flex camera rigs are claimed to enable operators to capture near pixel-perfect live-action 3D footage when used in conjunction with its image processing systems.

Launching at some point in 2010, Sky's new 3D channel will be broadcast over its existing high definition infrastructure, meaning that around 1.6m Sky+ HD subscribers will just need to purchase a 3D-ready TV set to view the content.

Last week, LG, Panasonic, Samsung and Sony all revealed plans to support Sky's 3D channel in the UK and Ireland with a range of new 3D-ready models.

Sky has confirmed plans to showcase its 3D TV service at the Westfield shopping centre in London as part of a series of planned public demonstrations over the next 12 months.

On March 12, the West London centre will host a demo of 3D content produced by Sky over the past two years, including last month's Burberry show at London Fashion Week.

Shoppers will be given polarising glasses to watch the demo, which includes Arsenal's game against Manchester United, along with tennis, golf, boxing, ballet, movies and live music.

All visitors to the 3D demo will be given the opportunity to enter a competition to win a 3D-ready TV set, a Sky+ HD box and a subscription to Sky's top tier TV pack.

Over the next 12 months, 100 other shopping centres throughout the UK will also host a 3D demo as Sky's new channel becomes more widely available.

The 3D channel will launch to selected pubs next month, before expanding to Sky's top tier TV customers later in the year.

Subscribers will need a Sky+ HD receiver and a 3D-ready TV set to watch the service, but can chose either passive 3D glasses, which are cheap but require expensive TV sets, or active glasses incorporating mechanised shutter technology, which are more expensive but use a cheaper set.

Sky has reportedly purchased 15,000 3D-ready TV sets from Korean manufacturer LG in preparation for the rollout of its 3D service to pubs around the UK.

The satellite broadcaster's new 3D channel will launch to selected pubs next month, before expanding to Sky's top tier TV customers later in the year.

Under the partnership deal, LG will supply a batch of its new 3D TVs to be installed by Sky engineers at public venues around Britain before weekly 3D Premier League matches commence in the spring.
