Spain's culture channel from national public broadcaster RTVE, Cultural.es, broadcast via satellite and cable but which was soon to be offered also on DTT, is to close. Cost cutting is behind the move.

In order to replace it, parliamentary channel Canal Parlamentario will start transmissions in its place. The public broadcaster will also start work on the process to turn its second channel La 2 into a culture channel. The public company foresees the operation will save up to €7 million with this operation.

As a consequence of this change, La 2's sports contents will progressively start broadcasting on RVTE's sporting channel TeleDeporte. RTVE's children's contents will go to ClanTVE and news programmes will be offered on La 1 and/or Canal 24 Horas, RTVE's 24 hour news channel. So La 2 will offer RTVE's culture contents the company had thought to include within Cultural.es.
