new hd 3d sky box cannot add other channels

my friend as just bought new hd 3d sky box but he cannot add any channels to the services other channels ? he does not have a sky or freesat card .
when he goes to add channels the screen comes up with add viewing card ?
does he have to buy a card ?
as channel 5 is now free to air and he does not have channel 5

Sky HD boxes requrie a viewing card to access other channels.
I think the Sky+HD boxes do not.

If you have the "weak" five on 105, then if you wait a few days, then it should appear.
That version of Five is on AStra 2D horizontal frequency, whcih even 2.4m dishes cannot pull in 24/7.
In a few days we are expecting that version to be mapped to the same frequency as all the other fives....and it should appear...exact timescales I do not know.
