New UK TV Satellite News:

It appears that some of the Sky PAY channels are in the process of moving from their old satellite to their new satellite.

It has been reported today some Sky PAY channels may have moved from their old satellite (Astra 2a and 2B) to their new satellite, Astra 2F.

Reports suggest that some channels have moved to the new “European beam” on 2F.

We know something is happening as people in the “extreme fringe reception areas” are reporting a loss of channels today, in areas like the Canary Islands.

With all the recent gossip, rumours, and expat bar chat, about the possible loss of UK TV in Spain, and the threat of the UK satellite TV channels “going off the air in Spain”, I hope this quick question and answer post can help with some explanations about what is happening.

Why are we losing reception of out UK TV channels?

Loss of some ITV1 and ITV1 channels, C4HD, 4seven, Channel 5, Five USA and Five 8 from the 4th December 2012 is down to the fact that they moved to a new satellite, Astra 2F.

(see https://www.satandpcguy.com/forum/showthread.php?118361-Astra-2F-New-UK-TV-satellite-reception-in-Spain )

The beam for this new UK TV satellite is more focused on the Uk, and so its reception of the channels on this beam are worse than before.

If you have recently lost any other UK TV channels, then this i not as a result of this recently satellite movement.

Will I lose ALL my UK TV channels with this satellite change over?

No.

The new satellites have a mix of UK only and European beams see https://www.satandpcguy.com/Site/astra_2f_satellite_reception_footprint_map_uk_tv_spain.php

Channels on the UK beam you may find are harder to receive than before.

Channel on the European beams should see no changes in reception.

Why have these channels changed satellites?

Simply, the current Astra satellites are old and need replacing.

The satellite are old and after 12 years in service are coming to the end of their lifespan.

Will this change of satellite affect all of Spain?

Yes. But in some areas of Spain it has had less of an impact than in other areas of Spain.

For example, in the Valencia are, there has only been a very small drop in signal levels for the channels that have migrated to the new satellite.

In some northern areas of Spain like Catalonia and Barcelona, and southern areas like the Costa del Sol, reception of these channels on the new satellite has become worse.  This has meant that these channels are no longer available to on your current satellite dishes.

For Astra 2F Reception reports see https://www.satandpcguy.com/Site/astra_2f_satellite_reception_footprint_uk_tv_spain.php

How do I get these lost channels back?

Simply, get a larger satellite dish.

Although, rather than jumping now and getting a larger satellite dish, it may be best to wait until the bulk of the main UK TV channels, BBC and ITV, move satellites, and gauge the required satellite dish size on their reception also.

When will the BBC channels move satellites?

The BBC has said that they will be moving their channels to the second new Astra satellite, Astra 2E. This will be launched sometime early to mid 2013.

See : https://www.satandpcguy.com/forum/showthread.php?118711-BBC-Channel-to-move-from-1N-to-2E-in-quot-summer-2013-quot

When will the ITV channels move satellites?

We are assuming they will move to the new satellites at the same time as the BBC channels.

Will this affect BBC HD channels also?

Yes. The move to the new satellite will affect all BBC channels.

See : https://www.satandpcguy.com/forum/showthread.php?118711-BBC-Channel-to-move-from-1N-to-2E-in-quot-summer-2013-quot

Will this affect Sky channels also?

Yes. Sky channels on Astra 1n, Astra 2a and Astra 2B will all be migrated over to the new satellites.

When and in what order is not known at the moment.

When will these changes take place?

These satellite changes have already started to take place, with the first new satellite Astra 2F. The second new satellite, Astra 2E is expected to be operational mid 2013. The final new satellites, Astra 2G, is expected to be operational mid 2014.

Why is Sky changing the footprint for BBC channels?

Sky is not doing anything to BBC channels. Sky does not own the satellites. Sky and all the other UK TV broadcasters rent frequencies from the satellite owners SES Astra.

I pay my UK TV License fee when I am in the UK, why can I not watch the BBC in Spain?

The UK License Fee is a UK tax on TV reception equipment in the UK.

The BBC, and all the other UK TV channels, have no obligation to provide services outside the UK. The only but programme rights for the UK only.

Spain has no TV licence fee.

Can I pay to watch BBC programmes via satellite in Spain?

BBC Worldwide, the commercial part of the BBC, provide a subscription service called BBC Entertainment. It is designed for the expats market. Although it shows content from BBC and Channel 4, not all content shown in the UK is available on this BBC Entertainment service.

EU law (Television without Frontiers) says I can watch UK TV anywhere in Europe?

No it does not.

It does say EU countries cannot block transmissions from other EU countries. But it does not say anything about allowing you to watch UK TV channels in other EU countries.

Television without Frontiers, or now the AVMS Directive, is simply guidelines as to how to govern and regulate TV around Europe.

See https://www.satandpcguy.com/Site/europe_television_laws_satellite_tv_costa_blanca_spain.php

Didn’t the EU recently say that I could watch Sky TV in Spain?

The recent “pub landlady” ruling, basically said that it is not criminally illegal to use Sky, or other viewing cards, outside their home territory. But the ruling also does not force any broadcaster make their viewing card available in other territories.

Updates and any other Q&A about these recent changes to reception of UK TV in Spain will be posted at : https://www.satandpcguy.com/forum/showthread.php?118755-Loss-of-UK-TV-channels-in-Spain-some-questions-and-answers

December 2012 Update : Channel Movement From Astra 1N to Astra 2F
On Tuesday 4th December 2012, a number of UK satellite TV channels and frequencies moved from their temporary satellite home Astra 1N, to their new home on Astra 2F.

The channels and frequencies affected are :
10.964 H SR 22.000 FEC 5/6 (CH5/5USA/5*/Channel 5+1),
10.994 H SR 22.000 FEC 5/6 (ITV 1 Granada HD/ITV 1 Central South West SD/ITV 1 Anglia West SD/ITV 1 Meridian North SD/ITV 1 Yorkshire East SD/ITV 1+1 Yorkshire SD),
11.052 H SR 22.000 FEC 5/6 (ITV 1 Central South SD/ITV 1 Central East SD/ITV 1+1 Wales SD/ITV 1+1 Westcountry SD/ITV 1+1 Tyne Tees SD)
11.126 V SR 22.000 FEC 5/6 (Channel 4 HD/4Seven SD)

There have been many reception reports for Astra 2F in Spain.

The initial indication are that there are areas of Spain that are now experiencing “no satellite signal” messages for these channels are the southern areas of Spain, like Andalucía, Malaga, Marbella  and the Costa Del Sol.

Previously these areas benefitted from “bonus” reception due to a “side lobe” on Astra 2D, meaning they could receive most of the main UK TV channels on a “medium” sized satellite dish – such as a 1.25m satellite dish

However, with the change of these channels from Astra 1N to Astra 2F, these dishes are now simply too small to receive Channel Five and Channel 4HD.

A larger satellite dish will be required to be able to receive these channels again. What sized satellite dish to be able to receive these channels is currently debateable, as there are numerous conflicting reports for these areas.

However, it may be best to wait until the main bulk of the UK TV channels, like BBC and ITV move to their new satellite, whenever this may be. Only then can you be sure what sized satellite dish you will need to be able to receive these channels. There is no point in buying a 1.4m satellite dish today, if it is unknown and not guaranteed to receive the BBC channels when they move to their new satellite!

And at the moment, no-one knows what that will be.

Astra 2F UK Satellite changes:

A few (not all!) channels and frequencies moved from their old satellite to the new Astra 2F satellite last night.

The channels and frequencies affected are :

10.964 H SR 22.000 FEC 5/6 (CH5/5USA/5*/Channel 5+1),

10.994 H SR 22.000 FEC 5/6 (ITV 1 Granada HD/ITV 1 Central South West SD/ITV 1 Anglia West SD/ITV 1 Meridian North SD/ITV 1 Yorkshire East SD/ITV 1+1 Yorkshire SD),

11.052 H SR 22.000 FEC 5/6 (ITV 1 Central South SD/ITV 1 Central East SD/ITV 1+1 Wales SD/ITV 1+1 Westcountry SD/ITV 1+1 Tyne Tees SD)

11.126 V SR 22.000 FEC 5/6 (Channel 4 HD/4Seven SD)

People in some areas may notice loss of these channels on smaller 80cm or 1m dishes (especially if they are not aligned properly!)

But this does not mean the other channels (BBC ITV C4s) will not be moving – it is simply a question of when!

astra 2f satellite costa blanca
The Astra 2F satellite

From Astra SES – Facebook page 30/11/12:

“Thank you for your interest in ASTRA 2F. Services are currently being transferred to ASTRA 2F. BBC (Trp 2.061) has been migrated to Astra 2F whereas Channel 5 (Tp 2.057), ITV (2.059 & 2.063) and Channel 4 (Tp 2.068) will move to Astra 2F next Tuesday. This will then mark the completion of the transfer”.

No mention of any of the other BBC or ITV or C4 frequencies / transponders….

What does this mean?

The first paragraph DOES NOT say BBC ITV C4 will all be moved to 2F by Tuesday.

It says one frequency has, and a further 4 frequencies will move on Tuesday.

I say “No mention of any of the other BBC or ITV or C4 frequencies / transponders”.

So not all frequencies are moving.

For information:

The BBC transponder mentioned – (Trp 2.061) – is the 11023 carrying the two HD channels.

There is no mention of the other 4 bbc transponders (45,46,47,48) that carry the other bbc channels.

The ITV transponders mentioned – (59 and 63) – carry some ITV1, itv1+1 and iTV1hd regional variations.

There is no mention of the other 5 ITV transponders, (44,49,53,54,56) that carry the other ITV1 regions, and other ITV channels.

The C4 transponder mentioned – (68) – carries 4seven and C4HD.

There is no mention of the other 2 C4 transponder (41 42) that carries the other c4 channels.
