Trader in UK first to be prosecuted for selling Fully Loaded Android Kodi boxes.

A trader selling boxes which allow viewers to watch copyright material for free is set to be the first in the UK to face prosecution.

The trader, from Middlesborough, has been told Middlesbrough Council is taking him to court following an 18-month investigation in what could prove a landmark case.

The kit – also known as a ‘Kodi box’ – allows viewers to watch programming like Premier League football and Hollywood movies for free.

Police in Scotland say they are conducting the world’s biggest ‘pirate box’ crackdown. Together with the Federation Against Copyright Theft, police are targeting sellers of Android-style set-top boxes and believe that thousands of pubs could be customers. In addition, three torrent sites have been closed down.

There are several types around but the most common have Android under the hood. Typically in small set-top or dongle format, these products can be loaded with media software from Google’s Play Store or invariably “side-loaded” with more unofficial products such as customized versions of Kodi, Showbox and Popcorn Time.

The UK’s Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit has arrested six individuals suspected of being involved in the supply of ‘pirate’ Android boxes.

The Android boxes are configured with legal software such as Kodi, which is modified by add ons to make Kodi do less legal things such as obtain free TV from the Internet.

Individuals looking to make a quick buck are selling piracy-configured devices on eBay, Amazon and other venues, meaning that anyone can get in on the close-to-free TV action by shelling out a few pounds, euros or dollars.

Trading standards officers and police are carrying out a crackdown across England, Wales and Northern Ireland against those who offer pirate and counterfeit products via Facebook.

Interestingly, ‘pirate’ Android boxes have been targeted again, for streaming content illegally.

Facebook accounts are more and more being used as a way to distribute pirated content..

Operated by the National Trading Standards eCrime Team alongside the National Markets Group (with members the BPI, Federation against Copyright Theft and the Alliance for Intellectual Property Theft) Operation Jasper is manned by officers from police and government agencies and is reportedly the largest operation of its type. It is targeted at “criminals” who exploit social media to commit “copyright theft” and sell “dangerous and counterfeit” goods.

English Premier League Chief Executive Richard Scudamore has lauded beIN SPORTS for leading the fight against TV piracy throughout the MENA region.

As one of the industry’s fastest growing networks, beIN SPORTS recently launched its innovative ‘Go Secure’ drive in an attempt to prevent non-subscribers from accessing its programs illegally.

The region-wide campaign has seen most of the network’s 17 channels securely encrypted so that only viewers whose smart cards are registered to their set-top-boxes can receive them.

Expressing his gratitude in an interview with the network, the Premier League Chief Executive said beIN SPORTS’ efforts have noticeably contributed to the English football division’s battle against global TV piracy.

“beIN SPORTS has been hugely cooperative with us by updating their technology to ensure that the availability of its smart cards outside of the MENA region is much easier for us to manage,” said Scudamore. “Therefore where the Premier League identifies cards that should not exist in the UK beIN SPORTS is cooperating with us to switch them off.”

With beIN SPORTS’ remaining channels now set to be secured in the coming weeks, soon only network subscribers will have access to exclusive sports coverage in the MENA region, which includes the Formula One championships, La Liga, the Premier League and the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

With global incidents of TV piracy increasing, the Premier League made a decision last November to block some international rights holders from broadcasting games held on a Saturday at 3pm GMT.

According to Scudamore, the beIN SPORTS ‘Go Secure’ campaign has already achieved considerable success.

“With the full cooperation of beIN SPORTS we are seeing piracy figures drop, leading to a significant reduction in the number of offenders,” said Scudamore. “So people must be patient here, because once we see the number of offenders fall to a manageable number, only then will we allow that content back.”
