Sky starting to replace older Digiboxes boxes

As mentioned in a previous blog post ( HERE ) Sky mentioned in their Annual Report that they intent to move all their customers from SD and older HD digiboxes to newer digiboxes.

One reason for this is because the older digiboxes are no longer supports, and receive no firmware updates.

And these older digiboxes are used for cardsharing systems. Cardsharing is where you can “unlock” Sky Pay channels using a receiver connected to the internet and a cardshare server. Needless to say people using such systems said it was “scaremongering” and would not happen.

That said, Sky customers using older Sky Digiboxes have started to receive letters that state :

Sky is putting the finishing touches to an advanced set-top box, dubbed SkyQ, that it hopes will be a powerful weapon in its defence of its domestic pay-TV business against BT and help it integrate its European operations.

The new hardware is due to be unveiled within weeks and will offer satellite households an “Apple and Netflix-style” experience, according to industry insiders.

It is hoped that this new software will help solve recent problems with Sky digboxes, from Planner, Series link and freezing box issues.

The new software – R010.070.94.00P – started to be rolled out to Sky boxes on Friday 27th February 2015.

New software is usually rolled out during the early hours, so as not to disrupt any recordings.

Sky HD digibox software updates :

Sky have started to roll out new software to it’s Sky+HD digiboxes.

The new version started to be rolled out to boxes mid August.

The new software will be rolled out to all sky+HD boxes over the next few weeks.

Amongst the updates, Sky have now updated the Manual Tuning Options.

You can now have:
the option to change the Symbol rate to 22.0, 27.5 and 29.5
the option to change the FEC to from 1/2 to 9/10
the option to change the broadcast standard to DVB-S or DVB-S2
the option to change the Modulation standard to QPSK or 8PSK

These changes now make it possible to manually add all HD channels, to your Sky boxes “Other Channels” list.

Previously the frequency parameters used by many HD channels (a symbol rate of 29.5 for example) were unavailable on a Sky box.

However, this will only be of benefit should you wish to add an alternate ITV1 HD regional variation to your Sky box, as all other HD channels are available already on the Sky HD channel list.

Sky UK recently announced that they will be launching a new version of their Sky+HD digibox, which is expected to be available from early September 2013.

The new Sky+HD Digibox, the DRX890W will have built-in / integrated wireless internet connection as standard, and has a “WPS” button to help wifi connection.

Initially the new Sky+HD digibox will become the version offered to new Sky HD subscribers, and to targeted groups of customers who don’t yet have Sky+HD boxes.

So far Sky+HD users have had to connect their box to their router via Ethernet and Ethernet cable, sometimes meaning running cables around rooms to ensure the connection. With the new Sky+HD Wi-Fi-enabled digibox, Sky+HD users will only have to ensure theat their Sky+HD Wi-Fi-enabled digibox is located in an area capable of receiving a Wifi signal.

The new Sky+HD Wi-Fi-enabled digibox will no longer have the RF port (Aerial in and RF1/RF2 Out), which may prove a disappointment for anyone who use a “Sky Magic Eye” RF system to output the pictures to other TVs using coaxial cables.

Reports suggest that there will be two versions of the Sky+HD Wi-Fi-enabled digibox – a 500GB and a 2TB version.

It is unknown when these boxes will be made available to buy in Spain and Europe, and at what price.

Sky have started to roll out a software update in the last few days.

Initially this software will be deployed to Sky DRX890 and DRX895 digiboxes.

Amongst the updates, is a change to the “Auto standby” mode.

Auto Standby, is the mode that puts your Sky digibox into “Standby” should the box  be left on a channel for so many hours without a button being pressed on the remote control. This, the Sky digibox assumes, means their is no one watching the box. And so, the Sky digibox will power down into Standby mode.

Standby mode is shown on the Sky digibox, as the “on / off” lights will be orange.

This new update allows you to put the box in “Eco” mode.

So instead of powering down into “Standby” mode, the Sky digibox will power down to “Eco” mode, and will automatically put your Sky digibox box into RED standby mode overnight if you don’t have any recordings scheduled. Supposedly this saves more in power than leaving your box in “Orange” Standby mode.

However while the box is in this state it is essentially turned off an no recordings will take place.

You can change this option in the Sky digibox menu system.

A Sky+HD digibox is ideally to be used with two cable feeds from your satellite dish. This allows you to use the full potential of your Sky+HD box, and allows you to watch one channel and record another at the same time.

However, in some cases, especailly in community satellite installations, it may not be possible to have a seconds cable feeding your Sky+HD box.

Having only a single cable to your Sky+HD box can cause some problems, such as the “No satellite signal is being received” on screen error message, if you do not tell your Sky+HD box that you are only using a single cable.

This can only be done on a Sky+HD Digibox.

This is the process to set your Sky+HD box into single feed / cable mode using the latest Sky HD EPG.
