Astra 1N Satellite Signal Footprint Map

The Astra 1N satellite launched on 6th August 2011. Astra 1N was initially deployed at was located at 28.2° east. Astra 1N satellite was designed with 55 Ku band transponders.

The Astra 1N satellite provides three broadcast beams, each with horizontal and vertical polarisation. The three signal footprints are: a UK spot beam, Pan-European Beam 1 and Pan-European Beam 2. One beam was dubbed the “uk beam”, as it was though to be sharply focussed on the UK, to prevent signal overspill into Europe. However, channels on this UK Beam could be received in Spain using a satellite dish of around 80x85cm.

The maps below show the official signal footprints. They are not 100% accurate, but do give an indication of the required satellite dish size for reception of many UK TV channels.

SES Astra also released a further predicted coverage map for Astra 1Ns UK beam.It showed that contrary to what some people had been saying, that Astra 1Ns UK beam would “spill over” into Spain, meaning that UK TV channels would still be available in most of Spain. Interestingly, those people who were selling Android Costa Smart TV Kodi boxes in the Valencia and Costa Blanca area only posted the first image, saying that it showed that Astra 1Ns signal would not be available in Spain. However, they failed to point out that the map only showed reception for people using a 60cm satellite dish!
