DEFAULT TRANSPONDER FREQUENCY SETTINGS FOR SKY BOXES IN COSTA BLANCA SPAIN.

This section answers the following questions:

"What to do if you receive the message "NO SATELLITE SIGNAL BEING RECEIVED" on a Sky digibox receiver?"

"What to do if you are receiving a No Default Transponder message?"

"What is the best Sky Default Transponder frequency setting to use on the Costa Blanca Spain?"

"What is the best Freesat Default Transponder frequency setting to use on the Costa Blanca Spain?"

"My Sky digibox is showing a "searching for listings" message?"

"What are the best Sky set up frequency codes for Spain"

"How To Change Sky Transponder Settings"

"How To Set Up a Sky Digibox with the best frequency settings for Spain"

"How To Access the Secret Sky Installers Menu on a Sky digibox"

When a Sky receiver / digibox / box is turned on the first time the first thing the box tries to do is, amongst other things, to download approximately 6 hours of EPG information from a specific default frequency (or Transponder) from the satellite. The Sky digibox must have this information to start to work and allow you to watch Sky TV..

Unfortunately, the default frequency (transponder) that the decoder is initially set to look for (11778) is one of the weaker signals in Spain and the Costa Blanca, especially during the afternoons, even on a 2.4m dish!  So should you experience one of Spain's frequent power cuts during this period, your Sky digibox may be unable to find this frequency, fail to boot up, and display the on screen message "No Satellite Signal Being Received".

Therefore, to assist the digibox to receive the bare minimum information it requires boot up the default frequency must be changed to another frequency to enable the initial information download.

The best / most popular default transponder frequency for the Costa Blanca Spain is 12.129, although you can use any of the many frequencies that you can actually receive at the time. Yes ANY frequency will work, as long as you can receive the particular frequency!

In most cases, after a successful download the default transponder frequency will return to 11778. This is normal, and you should not really expect the digibox to keep the default transponder you have manually input.

NOTE: Changing this default transponder frequency on a Sky box does not increase how long channels are available, no matter what people tell you. It is only used to “assist” the receiver to boot up. For example if you change the default transponder frequency setting to another frequency setting, say 12129, then when you ask the receiver to change to Sky News the receivers will look for Sky News on 12207, and as a basic Sky receiver can only look at one frequency at a time, the default transponder setting of 12129 is not used and overridden. So this is why changing the default transponder does not increase the time a channel is available and why changing this frequency does not keep BBC or ITV One, Two, Three Four for longer.

You do not have to do this process for Freesat or Generic receivers, just Sky receivers.

Note that this may not work with Sky HD receivers with the new HD EPG / software.

This form has step by step instructions as to how to perform this change of frequency, so you can print it off and keep it available should it be required again (ideal if you rent out your property!)

Unblock Tuner Process v1.3

Or you can follow these instructions.

1. Remove the power cable from the Digibox only. This can be found on the back of the Digibox, and is normally a black cable on either the extreme left or right of the Digibox. Reinsert the power cable after 30 seconds.

2. Turn on the Digibox.

3. On the Sky remote control press the SERVICES button

4. On the Sky remote control press 401 (four zero one) and then the SELECT button.

5. If the above has been done correctly you should see the Installer Setup Menu screen. If you do not see the Installer Setup Menu screen then start this process again.

6. Press “2” on your Sky remote control.

7. If done correctly should be looking at the Default Transponder screen.

8. On the Sky remote control press 12129 (one two one two nine). This will change the default FREQUENCY to 12.129.

9. Ensure that the default POLARIZATION is “V”.

Ensure that the default SYMBOL RATE is “27.5”.

Ensure that the default FEC is “2/3”.

10. On the Sky remote control press the DOWN ARROW button three times and then press SELECT. This will SAVE NEW SETTINGS and return you to the Installer Setup Menu screen.

11. On the Sky remote control press the BACK UP button until you exit all the menus.

If done correctly the time will appear on the white bar, and picture will shortly reappear – try channel 501 (Sky News).

If after doing this "default transponder" process you still do not have access to your channels, then try repeating the process. It may be that there is another issue with your satellite installation (LNB problem, dish needs realigning) and you will need to call your engineer our.

The process is slightly different on Sky HD+ boxes.

New Sky HD EPG Settings:
The process of changing the default transponder frequency setting on the new HD menu system is very similar.
The process can be found at Default Transponder Frequency Settings for a Sky HD digibox. No satellite signal being received message on a Sky HD box in Spain

This is a video tutorial showing you the simple steps to change your default transponder frequency settings - (ADSL users only)

Note: To play this video you may have to authorise the Active X controllers, via the message on your toolbar.

Some companies advise you to continue the process by going into the Add Channels feature and to Press the Yellow button to place a tick next to a channel. This process is completely unnecessary, and can, in some cases "lock" the Sky box, and require another reboot.

Case Study:
This is an email I received recently regarding someone who was having problems with their digibox keeping the Default Transponder frequency setting, and my reply.

Email:
I have a 1.9 mtr dish with sky+ box which has been great for almost a year now. only problems have been during v bad weather( pixilation) and power cuts when i have had to reset the default transponder to 12.207.
however recently for whatever reason i have to reset the default transponder daily. not a problem.. but the sky box will not keep the saved setting, immediately goes back to default 11.778 and all i get picture wise is a pixelated itv & bbc which remains in the same state all day.
i have read and re-read your excellent info pages on the above problem and am beginning to wonder if my sky box is faulty? any ideas. very best regards and applause on your website.

Email Ends

Response:
Hi Thanks for your email.
No. Your sky box is not faulty.
A sky digibox should always return to the default transponder frequency of 11778.
The default transponder is only used to help the digibox get the main information it requires from the satellite during boot up. The main frequency of 11778 holds the full 7 days programme guide and all the information a sky box needs to help it boot up....but at certain times of the day, and in many locations in Spain, 11778 is very weak, and therefore the digibox cannot get access to the information it requires.
So you help the digibox get this information but asking it to look at an alternate” frequency, as all frequencies hold a minimum amount of programme guide information – approx 6 hours.
Once the box has got all the information is needs, pictures will be seen, and in 99.9% of the time the default transponder will return to 11778.
Changing the default transponder does not make channels last longer...there are over 80 transponders in use, each has around 7 to 10 channels on each. If you scan the channels on 12207 you will only see sky news channels...and no BBCS or itvs...proving changing the default transponder it has no impact of BBC or ITV reception! Your sky digibox will use whatever frequency it requires to look at...so if you want to watch Sky News your box will use frequency 12207 as that is where sky news site, for BBC News it will look at 11952, regardless of what default transponder has been set!
If your ITV and BBCS are breaking up then either your dish has moved out of alignment, or your LNB needs replacing.
Response End

It is a common misconception about the reason why you need to change the Default Transponder, one which I demonstrate to clients by showing them what few channels are on the frequency they use! All changing the default transponder frequency setting on a Sky digibox does it to help the receiver boot up and clear the "No Satellite Signal Being Received" message.

.You may also need to ensure your LNB settings are also correct, as if they are not then you may not be able to receive all the available channels. LNB Settings on a Sky Box
