Liverpool won their group by a maximum of 18 points ahead of Atletico Madrid, FC Porto and AC Milan, followed by Inter Milan (2-0, 0-1), Benfica (3-1, 3-3) and Bayern-Bezwinger FC Villarreal (2: 0 / 3: 2) the disadvantage.
Real prevailed in the group with 15 points ahead of Inter Milan, Sheriff Tiraspol and Shakhtar Donetsk, only losing the home game against Tiraspol . In the knockout round, Real eliminated Paris St. Germain (0:1/3:1), Chelsea (3:1, 2:3 aet) and Manchester City (3:4/3:1 aet).

Why is St Denis played?
The 2022 final was originally supposed to take place in Munich. However, after the 2020 final was moved to Lisbon as a result of the corona pandemic, a new order was determined, so St. Petersburg was planned. As a result of the Russian attack on Ukraine , the venue changed again.
