Schitt’s Creek Finds a New Home on BBC iPlayer
Fans of the award-winning comedy Schitt’s Creek were disappointed when the beloved series disappeared from Netflix UK in May 2026. However, the good news is that the entire six-season run has already found a new home, with all 80 episodes now available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
For many viewers, Schitt’s Creek became one of those rare comfort shows that could be watched again and again. The story of the once-wealthy Rose family rebuilding their lives in a small town captured audiences around the world with its unique blend of humour, heart and memorable characters. As a result, news of its removal from Netflix generated plenty of discussion among fans online.
So why did Schitt’s Creek leave Netflix in the first place?
The answer is surprisingly simple. Like many popular TV shows on streaming platforms, Schitt’s Creek was available on Netflix under a licensing agreement. These agreements allow streaming services to carry programmes for a specific period before the rights expire. Once the contract comes to an end, the rights holder can either renew the deal or license the show to another broadcaster or streaming service. Reports suggest that Schitt’s Creek left Netflix UK because its licensing agreement expired, allowing the rights to be acquired elsewhere.
The BBC quickly stepped in and secured the UK streaming rights, bringing all six seasons to BBC iPlayer from 6 June 2026. This means UK viewers can continue enjoying the adventures of Johnny, Moira, David and Alexis Rose without needing a Netflix subscription.
Regular showing of Schitt’s Creek starts on BBC Three on Saturday 20th June at 2100.
The move is part of a wider trend in the streaming industry. As competition between streaming services continues to increase, popular programmes are frequently moved between platforms as rights deals expire. Viewers have become accustomed to seeing favourite shows disappear from one service only to reappear elsewhere a few weeks later.
For the BBC, securing Schitt’s Creek is a significant addition to its on-demand catalogue. The sitcom remains hugely popular years after its original run ended in 2020. The series won widespread critical acclaim, including multiple Emmy Awards, and developed a devoted fan base thanks to its positive storytelling, strong LGBTQ+ representation and unforgettable performances from Eugene Levy, Dan Levy, Catherine O’Hara and Annie Murphy.
Reaction from fans has been overwhelmingly positive. Social media and online communities were filled with relief once news broke that BBC iPlayer would become the show’s new UK home. Many viewers described Schitt’s Creek as their favourite comfort watch and welcomed the opportunity to continue streaming it without interruption.
For those who missed the series during its Netflix years, there has never been a better time to discover it. The complete collection is now available in one place, free to UK viewers with access to BBC iPlayer and a valid TV licence.
While Netflix subscribers may be disappointed to lose one of the platform’s most loved comedies, the transition to BBC iPlayer ensures that Schitt’s Creek remains easily accessible in the UK. In many ways, the move highlights the constantly changing nature of modern streaming, where content rights are often just as important as the programmes themselves.
The Rose family may have left Netflix, but thankfully they have not left our screens.
