Missing the Smithsonian Channel?
The Smithsonian Channel is a popular free documentary channel dedicated to factual programming, covering space, history, science, nature and wildlife.
It was broadcast in the UK via satellite (by Freesat and Sky), Freeview and Virgin Media.
However, on the 6th January 2023, the Smithsonian Channel
ceased to be broadcast to the UK via satellite or Freeview.
Its content has been moved over to its “parent company” streaming service, Paramount+. A subscription service.
Some content has also been made available on Channel 5’s streaming app – My5, which is owned by the same company.
It is thought that Paramount is planning to add a free, ad-supported Smithsonian channel to its Pluto TV platform.
A Paramount spokesperson (Paramount owns The Smithsonian Channel, Paramount+ and Channel 5) told us:
“From 5th January 2023, the Smithsonian Channel in the UK will move exclusively to Paramount’s popular streaming services, to reflect the way viewers consume our specialist programming and ensure its content is available to the widest possible audience. Smithsonian Channel programming will continue to have a strong presence on Paramount+ and My5, and we plan to launch a new branded channel on the leading free streaming service, Pluto TV, in the near future.”
The Smithsonian Channel was available on:
Freeview Channel 57
Freesat Channel 175
Sky Channel 171
Virgin Media Channel 276

I’m not happy with this. It was my staple Sunday morning viewing.
Totally bereft! Was my link to the real world. Hope it returns soon.
Dont think channel as it was will ever return, since its content is on Paramount+

Its content is still available, but just online. Doubtful it will become a standalone channel again
