Facebook and Instagram down – Tues 5th March 2024
On Tuesday 5 March 2024, millions of users around the world experienced extended disruption across some of the web’s most widely used social platforms — including Facebook and Instagram. For several hours, users reported that feeds would not load, content failed to refresh, and core features became inaccessible.
The disruption also appeared to affect related services such as Messenger and parts of WhatsApp, leading to widespread frustration and confusion. Outages of this scale attract global attention because Facebook and Instagram play central roles in both personal communication and business operations for countless individuals and organisations.
Users first began reporting issues mid-morning, noting that images, videos and stories were slow or failed to appear entirely. Attempts to refresh feeds or log back in produced error messages and “couldn’t load” screens. By midday, hashtags such as #InstagramDown and #FacebookDown were trending across other platforms as users turned to alternative channels to share their experiences. Many businesses that rely on Facebook and Instagram for customer engagement also felt the impact, with live marketing campaigns and scheduled content delayed or disrupted.
Outages like this typically occur due to technical faults in the underlying infrastructure — such as errors in server routing, database issues, or glitches introduced in new software updates. In some cases, problems in one region can cascade globally because of the interconnected nature of cloud systems. While the company behind these platforms, Meta, did not immediately confirm the exact cause, engineers reportedly worked to restore functionality across all affected services over the course of the day.
By late afternoon, engineers appeared to have stabilised the systems, with users gradually regaining access to their feeds, messages and media. Some reported intermittent performance as services recovered, but within several hours normal operation had largely resumed for most people.
The outage underscored how dependent individuals and businesses have become on centralised social networks. When Facebook and Instagram go down, it doesn’t just interrupt casual scrolling — it affects communication, commerce, and even emergency contact channels for many users. It also highlighted the value of alternative platforms as temporary outlets when major services falter.
Although disruptions of this magnitude don’t occur frequently, when they do they remind us of the scale and complexity of the infrastructure that underpins the digital social experience — and how even the biggest platforms can encounter technical hurdles.
