UK TV “U&” channels change frequencies
The UKTV “U&” channels are the latest channels to change frequencies, following in the footsteps of the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Sky, as part of the industry wide process to move channels on to the more efficient DVBS2 broadcast standard.
The move to DVBS2 means that these channels are no longer available on SD satellite receivers, and are now only available on HD satellite receivers boxes, Sky HD, Freesat HD etc.
The channels affected are :
U&Eden
U&Yesterday
U&Dave
U&W
U&Drama
and associated “+1” channels
Sky HD, SkyQ and Freesat HD users should not need to do anything, as their boxes will automatically update to the new frequencies. However, if you are using a SkyHD, Sky+HD, SkyQ or Freesat HD set top box and you have lost reception of these UKTV channels, then you may need to reboot your satellite receiver.
Users of other types of satellite receivers, will need to manually scan for the channels on their new frequencies.
Old Frequency: 12129 V 27500 5/6 DVB-S
New Frequency : 12129 V 27500 2/3 DVB-S2 8PSK
Why these changes?
This change is part of a broader industry-driven transition in the UK and Ireland aimed at upgrading satellite services to a more bandwidth-efficient broadcasting standard.
DVB-S2 was initially introduced to support HD channels, which demand greater bandwidth. However, most broadcasters have now adopted DVB-S2 for both SD and HD channels, allowing them to reduce satellite bandwidth costs for distribution. The widespread shift to DVB-S2, which gained momentum last year, has rendered older first-generation satellite receivers obsolete.
There are still a few broadcsters which have yet to make the changes to DVBS2 : Paramount (Channel 5), Narrative Entertainment (GREAT! movies, POP!), That’s Dance, NOW 90s and 00s.
