Why Some UK TV Channels Struggle in Summer Heat
Every summer, many UK expats and holiday homeowners across Spain notice the same frustrating issue. Certain UK TV channels suddenly begin to pixelate, freeze, or disappear completely during the hottest parts of the day.
And it is usually the same channels affected first.
The weaker UK channels, especially the “U” channels (UKTV channels like U&Dave, U&Drama, U&Yesterday and U&GOLD), along with some Channel 4 HD regional variations, and some Warner Bros Discovery channels like Quest and DMAX, are often the first to suffer during periods of intense summer heat and humidity.
This is a very common issue across parts of Spain, particularly in areas such as the Costa Blanca, Valencia, Murcia and other southern regions where UK satellite signals are already operating close to their reception limits.

Why Does Heat Affect Satellite TV?
Satellite TV signals are simply radio waves travelling thousands of miles from satellites positioned above Earth. By the time these UK-focused signals reach Spain, they are already much weaker than they are in the UK itself.
Many UK channels are broadcast on tightly focused “UK spot beams”, designed mainly for reception in Britain and Ireland. In Spain, especially further south, viewers are already receiving these signals at the edge of coverage.
Once summer temperatures rise, the situation becomes even worse.
Hot air and increased humidity can absorb and scatter satellite signals, reducing signal strength further before it even reaches the dish. Afternoon humidity is particularly problematic, which is why many viewers notice issues during mid to late afternoon or early evening.
This often results in:
- Picture breakup or pixelation
- Audio glitches
- “No satellite signal” messages
- Complete loss of weaker channels
- Intermittent reception during the hottest hours
Why the “U” Channels Are Often First to Fail
In recent years, many viewers in Spain have noticed that the rebranded “U” channels are especially vulnerable during summer weather conditions.
This is partly because some of these channels now use slightly weaker satellite transponder configurations than before, making them more sensitive to poor weather conditions and marginal dish setups.
Channels commonly affected include:
- U&Dave
- U&Drama
- U&Yesterday
- U&GOLD
- U&W
- Channel 4 HD regions
- Quest
- DMAX
- Food Network
For many viewers, standard definition channels may continue working while HD versions fail first, simply because HD broadcasts generally require stronger, cleaner signals.
The Hidden Problem: Overheating Equipment
The heat does not only affect the signal travelling through the air.
Satellite equipment itself can also struggle in extreme temperatures.
The LNB — the small receiver mounted on the front of the dish arm — sits in direct sunlight for hours every day during summer. When temperatures climb into the high 30s or even 40s Celsius, the electronics inside can overheat, reducing performance significantly.
Satellite dishes can also expand slightly in the heat. Over time, this may cause minor warping or alignment issues. A dish that was only just correctly aligned during winter may become unreliable in summer.
This is why marginal installations or smaller dishes usually suffer the worst problems during Spanish summers.
Can Anything Be Done?
In many cases, yes.
A properly aligned larger satellite dish can dramatically improve reception reliability during difficult summer conditions. Higher quality LNBs can also help maintain signal strength when temperatures rise.
Some viewers only discover their installation is borderline once summer arrives.
Unfortunately, no system can completely overcome extreme atmospheric conditions. Even perfectly installed systems may occasionally experience temporary signal loss during exceptionally hot and humid afternoons.
The good news is that reception usually improves again later in the evening as temperatures and humidity levels begin to fall.
And when autumn and winter return, cooler air and clearer atmospheric conditions generally restore far more stable reception once again.
