The Meeting of Muixerangues in Gandia delivered an unforgettable blend of tradition, emotion and pure human strength. Four renowned Valencian collas — Algemesí, Marina Alta, Safor and Xàtiva — gathered in the heart of the city, filling the Plaza Major with vibrant colours, rhythmic music and crowds eager to witness one of the region’s most symbolic cultural displays.

Each group showcased the depth of the muixeranga tradition: the unmistakable sound of dolçaina and tabalet guiding every movement, perfectly coordinated bases locking into position, and children — the “xiquets” and “xiquetes” — rising carefully toward the sky. As the towers lifted above the square, the crowd watched in awe, holding their breath with every new figure.

But this centuries-old tradition also carries risk. The most dramatic moment of the day came when one of the tallest towers collapsed during the descent. A sudden wobble, a brief moment of uncertainty — then everything gave way. In seconds, the structure crumbled, sending members tumbling to the ground. The plaza erupted in gasps as emergency teams rushed in. One participant was injured and taken to hospital, a stark reminder of the difficulty and danger behind these human constructions.

Yet the event also delivered an extraordinary act of strength and courage. During another performance, a tower began to shake, threatening to collapse. A woman positioned in the middle formation dug deep, activating every ounce of strength to stabilise the structure while two small children balanced on her shoulders. She refused to let them fall. The emotion on their faces when the tower finally descended safely said everything — trust, resilience, and the unbreakable spirit of the muixeranga.
