Before You Begin

Before starting the installation, make sure you have:

  • Your Manhattan S4-R connected to your television using the supplied HDMI cable.
  • One or two satellite cables connected from your dish system.
  • Internet access available if you wish to connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet during setup.
  • Batteries fitted to the supplied remote control.

Once everything is connected, switch on the receiver and follow the on-screen setup wizard.

The First Time Setup Wizard

The Manhattan S4-R guides you through a simple installation process using an easy-to-follow setup wizard.

During installation you’ll normally be asked to configure:

  • Language
  • Screen resolution
  • Internet connection
  • Satellite signal configuration
  • Channel scan
  • Regional preferences

For most users, the default settings are all that is required.

Choosing the Correct Signal Configuration

One of the setup screens allows you to choose your satellite installation type.

For most homes using a standard satellite dish, simply select:

Use Default Settings

However, if your property uses a communal satellite system, such as those commonly found in flats or apartment buildings, you may need to configure SCR (Satellite Channel Router), also known as Unicable or dCSS.

We’ve produced a dedicated guide explaining these advanced settings in more detail.

Connecting to the Internet

Connecting the Manhattan S4-R to your home network allows access to a range of online services including catch-up TV and streaming apps.

The recorder supports both:

  • Wired Ethernet
  • Built-in Wi-Fi

If you don’t connect during the initial setup, you can always do so later from the Settings menu.

Channel Scanning

Once the satellite configuration has been confirmed, the Manhattan S4-R automatically searches for available Freesat channels.

The process only takes a few minutes, after which the recorder downloads the latest programme guide and completes the installation.

When finished, you’ll be taken directly to live television.

Troubleshooting Setup Problems

If the setup process doesn’t complete successfully, check the following:

  • Are the satellite cables connected securely?
  • Is the correct satellite configuration selected?
  • Is your dish aligned correctly?
  • If using SCR or Unicable, have the correct user band settings been entered?

Most installation problems are caused by incorrect satellite configuration rather than faults with the recorder itself.

Final Thoughts

The Manhattan S4-R has one of the simplest installation processes of any modern Freesat recorder. For the majority of users, selecting the default settings is all that’s required before the receiver automatically scans for channels and begins downloading the programme guide.

If you’re using a more advanced satellite installation, such as a communal SCR or Wideband system, additional configuration may be required, but the recorder includes all the necessary options during setup.
