The BBC has today announced details of its Wimbledon 2014 coverage.

The 2014 tournament takes place from June 23 to July 6, with coverage on BBC television, radio and digital.

Sue Barker will once again lead the TV coverage of BBC One and Two, while Clare Balding will present on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Reigning Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli and British number one Laura Robson have signed up to join the BBC’s Wimbledon commentary team.

Bartoli announced her retirement from the game last summer, while Robson is not playing due to wrist surgery.

Boris Becker is off the team this year, as the BBC says that he will be busy coaching after signing up to become head coach for Novak Djokovic.

Bartoli and Robson will join regulars such as Tim Henman, John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova, who made her debut on the commentary team in 2013.

Presenter John Inverdale, who has been replaced by Clare Balding as the host of Radio 5 Live’s Wimbledon coverage, returns to present Today at Wimbledon on BBC2.

The BBC said it would air 150 hours of TV coverage, more than ever before, with coverage beginning on 23 June.

The BBC is to offer up to 12 live streams of coverage from Wimbledon, giving the annual event its most comprehensive coverage yet.

Viewers with connected TVs will be able to access the 12 HD streams with the BBC Sport App, available via the Connected Red Button. This includes viewers with the latest models of Freeview HD smart TVs and those with Virgin’s TiVo service. The BBC Sport App is also available on Freesat Freetime receivers. The availability of the streams in HD will depend on viewer’s broadband connections.

Via conventional means, the BBC will broadcast up to 5 red button streams, which are being created on terrestrial (for Freeview/YouView receivers), on cable and on satellite (Sky/Freesat receivers) to provide extra coverage of events through until the end of the Commonwealth Games in early August.

Temporary red button streams first appeared last week on satellite ()

Before the tournament, a replay of Murray’s win over Novak Djokovic last year will be aired on Saturday, June 21 at 10.15am on BBC Two. A review of the 2013 tournament will be broadcast the following day at 11am.

BBC Radio 5 Live will replay The Day We Won Wimbledon, a documentary about Andy Murray’s victory, narrated by John Hurt, on June 21 at 11am.

On BBC One, When Andy Won Wimbledon will document Murray’s year since winning the Grand Slam at 10.35pm on June 23.

Fans following this year’s Formula 1 season coverage will be able to choose from a selection of different cameras for viewing the action.

BBC Sport will provide unprecedented live streams from several parts of Grand Prix tracks on web-enabled devices.

There are now five different video options on top of the usual live TV coverage, with viewers able to watch from the pit-lane camera, follow the driver tracker or watch a stream from on-board cameras.

Options to watch TV pictures with Radio 5 live commentary over the top and a timing screen are also available.

The all-access coverage will be open to audiences through the BBC Sport website and via the BBC Sport apps for mobiles, tablets and connected TVs, but not on satellite TV or Freeview. The live pit-lane camera will also be available through the red button which will be available via satellite.

For race weekends hosted by Sky Sports, the BBC’s website will include live audio from Radio 5 alongside text commentary. Highlights will be accessible after all sessions and connected TVs will also include on-demand video highlights after each session, along with race reports and analysis.

Suzi Perry will present the BBC’s coverage, accompanied by chief analyst Eddie Jordan, expert analyst Allan McNish, commentators Ben Edwards and David Coulthard, and pit lane reporters Lee McKenzie and Tom Clarkson.

Telefónica has agreed a multi-year rights deal which will see it launch a dedicated F1 channel on its IPTV platform Movistar TV.

The agreement with Formula One Management, the commercial rights-holder for the motor racing series, starts with the forthcoming 2014 F1 season.

Telefónica said that the new channel will provide live coverage of all races, Qualifying and Practice sessions through any connected device, both inside and outside the home.

Movistar F1 will also include original content and supplementary information about the sport.

The new channel will launch in time for the 2014 season-opener in Melbourne, Australia on March 16.

Coverage will be free of commercial breaks during live coverage.

Coverage will include access to up to six different feeds – similar to that offered by the Sky Sports F1 service.

Spanish commercial broadcaster Antena 3 and Catalan public-service broadcaster TV3 last month agreed extensions to rights deals for Formula 1 covering the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

The BBC’s services to Sky and Freesat homes are carried on six transponders on satellites operated by SES Astra located at 28.2°East.
In February 2012, one of these satellites (Astra 2D) was retired and BBC services moved to a new temporary home on Astra 1N. Astra 1N is shortly to be moved to its permanent position at 19°East, so the affected BBC services will be transferring to a new permanent home on Astra 2E (28.2°East).This will take place in the early hours of Thursday 6th February 2014. Care has been taken to ensure the minimum of impact to UK viewers both during and after the change, such that no viewer actions should be required.

A small number of channels are unaffected by the change. These are on the multiplex “DSAT 8” which is carried on Astra 2F (also at 28.2°East). These are BBC ONE Scotland HD, BBC ONE Wales HD, BBC FOUR HD, BBC NEWS HD, CBeebies HD.
These channels are on the Astra 2F satellites UK spotbeam.

Generally the new transponder will improve reception in the South East of England, the north eastern coast of East Anglia, the North East of Scotland and the Shetland Isles.
The effect on coverage within Europe: Northern France and Belgium may see an improvement, outside of this area there may be a slight reduction in coverage with the need for a larger receive antenna.

This change will have no impact on UK households. Astra 1N and 2E have the same, tighter but slightly more powerful UK spot beams which means that UK households should get a slightly stronger signal. So if you happened to be on the edge of coverage, you will hopefully get more reliable reception.

The overspill of the BBC’s services will be reduced so viewers outside the UK will find it even harder to receive them. I know that this causes unhappiness to some of you living outside the UK. However, it is entirely appropriate because the BBC domestic services are for people living in the UK only.

Sky is to show highlights of the Ashes series through its free-to-air channel Pick.

During the Ashes series a one-hour highlights programme will be shown at 10pm (UK time) every day during the Test action, ODI and T20 matches.

Sky says its coverage will include commentary from David Gower, Michael Atherton, Sir Ian Botham, Nasser Hussain, Andrew Strauss, David Lloyd and Shane Warne.

Pick is available on Sky channel 152, Freeview, Virgin Media and Freesat

This may be because no broadcasters such as BBC ITV C4 or Five bought a highlights package to show on their channels…?
