Spanish Analogue TV Switch Off - TDT Costa Blanca TDT Spain
Spains main channels will be removed from the old analogue TV systems soon - in fact at the time of writing (April 2009) many regions of Spain will have less than 100 days until the main Spanish nationals channels are only available via Digital.
You will certainly see the difference between Spains analogue television and Digital TV. Crystal clear digital quality pictures, no or little cross interference, no ghosting, a lot more choice in channels, and the ability to change some of the programmes languages into English.
The first of the three-phase cut-off is on June 30 with the next subsequent analogue switch-offs are on December 30 and finally April 2, 2010.
There is a real fear by industry watchdogs that many households are unprepared. The fear is that these households have not adequately made the switch to receive TDT (terrestrial digital television) signals that are replacing the analogue system.
One analogue channel takes up one frequency, yet the same single frequency can carry around 4 or 5 digital channels. So it makes sense for the analogue signals to be switched off and their channels to go digital.
However, you may find that some local channels will still be transmitted in analogue only, until there is enough capacity (and money!) for them to go digital. Hence why you can see houses with two aerials, one for analogue and one for digital.
Many television transmitters around Spain have been transmitting the digital signals for a few years now, however, only around 60% of the Spanish population have actually converted their systems for digital reception.
In some areas you may not be able to receive a TDT signal, due to the terrain or distance to a transmitter. However, just as the UK, the Spanish Government is trying to make all TDT channels available via satellite - like the UK Freesat service. Thus all main Spanish channels will be available to all the population either via TDT or TDTSAT - for free with no monthly subscription. Although this has not yet been launched.
This is the same for many countries in the world, where the old analogue signals are being switched off. In the UK, many areas now have no analogue BBC2 signal, and can only receive this channel terrestrially via the analogue TV system replacement - Freeview.
