BBC One HD sets launch date
The BBC has confirmed that BBC One HD will launch on Freesat, Freeview, Sky and Virgin Media on November 3.
The channel numbers for each platform have not yet been confirmed.
The launch of BBC One HD was possible on Freeview HD after channel Five decision not to launch Five HD on Freeview before 2012.
BBC One HD will operate in addition to the existing BBC HD channel, and will be a high definition simulcast of BBC1.
The existing BBC HD channel will extend its regular broadcast hours from nine to 12 hours a day, and will be showing a selection of BBC HD programmes.
Both BBC HD channel will be available on the frequency just recently vacated by BBC1 Channel Islands – regarded as being the strongest BBC1 frequency.
BBC soap EastEnders will be broadcast in high definition for the first time on Christmas Day.
The move to HD has meant that sets at the soaps base at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, Herts have had a series of improvements have been made to sets. Most notably, a new-look Queen Vic will soon be unveiled on screen following the huge fire which engulfed the pub last month.
Yesterday, the BBC confirmed that BBC One HD will launch on multiple digital TV platforms on November 3.
This menas that EastEnders will be on the new BBC One HD channel in the run-up to Christmas, but will transmit as upscaled SD material until December 25.
