BBC’s New Freely Box: Streaming TV Without the Hassle
The way you watch TV in the UK is changing fast—and the BBC is making sure it’s not left behind.
The Freely box, soon to be launched by Everyone TV (a joint venture between the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Channel 5), marks a major shift from aerials and satellite dishes to internet-only viewing. It streams live channels and catch-up content entirely over broadband, offering a unified electronic programme guide (EPG) so you can hop between BBC One, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, and dozens more channels without juggling multiple apps.
The first Freely box, made by Netgem, is a sleek, modern device aimed at viewers who are comfortable with app-based interfaces and streaming menus. It’s feature-rich, integrating on-demand services, personalisation options, and search tools—essentially a Freeview replacement for the streaming era.
But the BBC isn’t stopping there. In a rare move for a tech product launch, it’s working on a second version of the box designed for accessibility and simplicity above all else. This isn’t just a stripped-down model to cut costs—it’s a deliberate redesign for people who find modern TV interfaces frustrating or inaccessible.
Think fewer menus, larger on-screen text, high-contrast visuals, and big, clearly-labelled remote buttons. The focus will be on watching TV without the faff—no labyrinth of login prompts, no confusing app stores, and no hidden settings buried five clicks deep. For many older viewers or those with visual, cognitive, or mobility challenges, this could be the most user-friendly television device ever released in the UK.
By developing two distinct products—a fully-featured mainstream Freely box and an accessibility-first BBC version—the broadcaster is acknowledging a crucial truth: the switch from broadcast to broadband TV won’t be one-size-fits-all. For millions, the future of free TV might just be simpler than the present.
