Sky Users Hit by “You Cannot Purchase This Programme” Errors
Many Sky UK satellite customers are reporting major problems today, 6th October 2025, with screens displaying messages such as “You cannot purchase this programme” or other errors related to purchasing and viewing rights. These issues appear even for users with fully active subscriptions and valid payment details.
According to both Downdetector and Sky’s own Service Status page, there are widespread technical faults affecting Sky TV services across the UK. Viewers say they’re suddenly unable to access subscribed channels, on-demand content, or pay-per-view events. In some cases entire channel listings temporarily vanish, while other users receive messages instructing them to “press the yellow button” or contact Sky support for further help.
Throughout the day, Sky’s technical teams have been working behind the scenes to diagnose and rectify the failures. However, user reports from this afternoon indicate that issues persist. Many customers are seeing incorrect programme information in the EPG (Sky Guide)—for example, the programme or film listed in the guide does not match what is actually being broadcast on the channel.
This inconsistency is likely due to ongoing problems with Sky’s card authorisation and entitlement systems. When these systems fail, the Sky box cannot confirm whether a viewer is allowed to watch certain protected or subscription-based content. To stabilise the platform while they work on a fix, Sky appears to have temporarily pulled all PIN-protected or restricted programming, which explains why some content differs from what is shown in the guide.
Why a Sky Viewing Card Is Needed
A Sky viewing card is used to decrypt and authorise access to subscription channels. Even free-to-air stations sometimes use the Sky card for region selection or rights verification. When the card servers or entitlement systems glitch, the box can’t confirm your permissions, so it blocks channels, PPV events, and any age-restricted content. That’s why customers may see purchase errors or missing channels during outages like this.
Past incidents have been caused by temporary outages, smart card verification failures, or software bugs following Sky system updates. Sky has acknowledged today’s issues publicly, confirming the fault lies with their systems rather than customer equipment.
If you are affected, it’s worth trying a full reboot of your Sky box, as this often triggers a fresh entitlement check. However, given the scale of the issue, waiting for Sky’s technical teams to complete their fixes may be the only practical solution for now.
