Channel 5 Gets Commonwealth Games Highlights
For the first time in more than 70 years, the BBC will not be the main broadcaster of the Commonwealth Games, with the 2026 Glasgow Games instead split between free-to-air highlights on Channel 5 and full live coverage on TNT Sports. The move marks one of the biggest shake-ups in British sports broadcasting in decades and signals the growing battle for premium sporting rights in the UK.The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will see TNT Sports broadcast more than 600 hours of live coverage after outbidding the BBC for the rights. While the BBC had reportedly considered keeping a highlights package, mounting financial pressures and changing priorities meant it ultimately stepped away from the event entirely.
However, fans who do not subscribe to TNT Sports will still be able to watch daily highlights thanks to a sublicensing agreement with Channel 5. This ensures the Games retain at least some free-to-air presence in the UK, something many sports fans and politicians consider important for national sporting events.
The decision ends the BBC’s historic association with the Commonwealth Games, a partnership dating back to 1954. For generations of viewers, the Games were a staple of BBC summer sports coverage, often featuring wall-to-wall athletics, swimming, cycling and gymnastics coverage across BBC One, BBC Two and the iPlayer platform.
TNT Sports’ takeover reflects a much wider shift in sports broadcasting. Subscription broadcasters and streaming services are increasingly willing to spend heavily on major sporting events, while traditional broadcasters face tighter budgets and changing viewing habits. TNT Sports already holds rights to major events including the Olympics, MotoGP and European football competitions.
The BBC’s strategy now appears more focused on digital clips, football highlights and selective live rights rather than blanket coverage of multi-sport events. According to reports, the corporation is currently undergoing significant cost-cutting measures, including job reductions and reductions in sports spending.
For viewers, the arrangement creates a mixed picture. TNT Sports subscribers will have access to comprehensive live coverage from Glasgow 2026, including multiple events and extended daily programming. Meanwhile, casual viewers can still keep up with the biggest moments through Channel 5’s highlights shows.
Some sports fans have welcomed the fact that at least part of the Games remains free-to-air, especially as the Commonwealth Games are listed under the UK’s Group B protected sporting events. This means highlights coverage should remain available on free television even if live rights move behind a paywall.
Others, however, worry that moving live coverage away from free television could reduce public engagement with the event. Discussions online and across sports media have raised concerns that fewer viewers may discover new athletes or follow smaller sports if the majority of coverage sits behind a subscription service.
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games themselves have already faced significant challenges. Glasgow stepped in as host after Australia withdrew due to rising costs, and the event has been streamlined compared to previous editions. Despite this, organisers hope the new broadcast agreements will help modernise and financially stabilise the Games moving forward.
For Channel 5, securing highlights rights is another sign of the broadcaster’s growing investment in sport. Over the past year, the channel has expanded into football, cricket and NFL coverage as it attempts to attract larger audiences.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games may therefore become remembered not just for the sport itself, but also for the moment British sports broadcasting entered a completely new era.
