The Muixeranga de la Safor is a cultural association based in Gandia, founded in 2002 with the mission of reviving the traditional muixeranga, a historic Valencian performance art of human towers and choreographed figures. Historical records mention a muixeranga troupe in Gandia as early as 1875, but today’s group is part of the broader modern revival of this unique festive expression rather than a direct continuation.

Currently, the Muixeranga de la Safor brings together around 100 members of all ages from towns across the comarca of La Safor. Participation often includes entire families, with grandparents, parents, and children taking part together. This intergenerational spirit makes the association not only a performing troupe but also a community project that strengthens local identity and cultural heritage.

Their repertoire blends traditional muixeranga figures—such as human towers and coordinated formations accompanied by the music of dolçaina and tabal—with innovative creations that expand the tradition.

Some of their original contributions include:

Llidoner: Inspired by the classic “Morera” figure, with a structure of 6-3-1-1-1. It debuted in Gandia in honor of the centenary hackberry tree (llidoner) of Ador.

Auriba: Designed by member Rafa Lorente, this figure has a 6-6-3-1-1 structure and takes its name from the historical Latin name of Oliva, “Auriba.”

The group has also achieved an important milestone by completing its first five-level human tower, in collaboration with other muixeranga associations across the Valencian Community.

Los registros históricos mencionan una compañía de muixeranga en Gandía desde 1875, pero el grupo actual forma parte de un resurgimiento moderno más amplio de esta singular expresión festiva, más que una continuación directa.

Actualmente, la Muixeranga de la Safor reúne a unos 100 miembros de todas las edades procedentes de pueblos de la comarca de La Safor. La participación suele incluir a familias enteras, con abuelos, padres e hijos. Este espíritu intergeneracional convierte a la asociación no solo en una compañía artística, sino también en un proyecto comunitario que fortalece la identidad local y el patrimonio cultural.

Su repertorio combina figuras tradicionales de la muixeranga —como torres humanas y formaciones coordinadas acompañadas de música de dolçaina y tabal— con creaciones innovadoras que expanden la tradición.

El grupo también ha logrado un hito importante al completar su primera torre humana de cinco niveles, en colaboración con otras asociaciones de muixerangas de la Comunidad Valenciana.
