Gandia Fiestas and Fair 2025 : El Tio de la Porra
The “Tío de la Porra” is one of Gandia’s most beloved traditions, celebrated each year at the end of September during the city’s Fira i Festes. He’s the one who kicks off the festivities, filling the streets of the Valencian Community with color, rhythm, and excitement.
Dressed in a distinctive military-style uniform, complete with an oversized hat and a large drum, the Tío de la Porra marches through Gandia with his lively band of drummers, spreading joy and enthusiasm wherever they go.
This tradition dates back to the 19th century, born as a playful and rebellious way to break up the routine—especially for children. On the first day of the fair, the Tío de la Porra visits local schools, beating his drum to “set the kids free” from class so they can join the celebrations. His arrival symbolizes happiness, freedom, and the festive spirit that defines Gandia’s annual fair.
