Many owners of Manhattan Plaza Freesat HD receivers found that Channel 4 HD on channel 104 suddenly began displaying a “No Signal” message despite most other UK channels continuing to work normally.

This issue became increasingly common after Channel 4 introduced multiple regional HD variations across the Astra satellites at 28.2° East.

For viewers in Spain and other parts of Europe, the problem was especially noticeable because many of the newer Channel 4 HD regional signals moved onto much weaker UK spot beam transmissions.

As a result, many satellite dishes outside the UK could no longer reliably receive the HD version automatically assigned by Freesat receivers.

However, while Channel 4 HD reception became problematic, the standard definition versions of Channel 4 often continued working normally and provided a useful alternative solution.

Why Channel 4 HD Stopped Working

Previously, Channel 4 HD existed mainly as a single national HD service using a relatively easy-to-receive satellite signal.

This allowed many viewers in Spain to receive the channel successfully using moderate-sized satellite dishes.

However, Channel 4 later regionalised its HD broadcasts and introduced six separate HD regional variants.

Five of these new HD regional streams were placed on much tighter UK spot beam satellite signals designed primarily for reception inside Britain and Ireland.

These signals became much harder to receive in southern Europe, especially in areas including:

• Costa Blanca
• Valencia region
• Murcia
• Costa del Sol
• Andalusia

Many Manhattan Plaza receivers automatically selected one of these weaker regional HD streams for channel 104 based on the Freesat postcode entered during setup.

The result for many viewers was:

• “No Signal” warnings
• Blank screens
• Pixelation
• Intermittent reception
• Complete loss of Channel 4 HD

Why Channel 4 SD Still Worked

Unlike the newer HD regional streams, many Channel 4 standard definition services continued broadcasting on easier-to-receive satellite beams.

This meant viewers who lost Channel 4 HD could often still receive Channel 4 SD without problems.

For many viewers in Spain, switching back to the SD version restored reliable Channel 4 viewing immediately.

Although picture quality was lower than HD, SD channels often remained far more stable on smaller dishes or during poor weather conditions.

Adding Channel 4 SD to Manhattan Plaza Receivers

Manhattan Plaza Freesat boxes are designed primarily around the Freesat electronic programme guide, where Channel 104 automatically points to the HD version.

However, users could still manually access or add Channel 4 SD services separately.

Dish Size Still Matters

The Channel 4 HD issue highlighted the increasing importance of dish size for UK satellite reception outside Britain.

Many satellite systems installed years earlier were designed around older, wider European satellite beams.

Modern Astra satellites increasingly use tightly focused UK spot beams with far less signal overspill into Europe.

As a result, many viewers in Spain found that while SD channels remained stable, HD regional services became increasingly difficult to receive reliably without larger dishes.
