Further to this weeks removal from Freesat of the BBC Red Button HD service (http://satandpcguy.com/blog/2013/06/bbc-hd-red-button-removed-from-satellite ) it has been confirmed that this Red Button Service will return to Freesat “sometime next week”.

The BBC Red Button HD service will be available on Freesat channel 980.

There are three Standard Definition Red Button Services, available on Freesat channels 981, 982, 983.

The BBC Red Button HD service will not be available on Sky HD receivers, due to technical difficulties between the BBC and Sky.

The three SD services will be available on Sky boxes, via the Red Button on a BBC channel.

Further to http://satandpcguy.com/blog/2013/06/bbc-confirm-expanded-red-button-service-for-the-summer/ the BBC Red Button HD service has been removed from satellite.

According to report, this is down to issues with Sky and their software. Simply put, both Sky and Freesat receivers required two different sets of data on the same satellite transponder. This allows both receivers to access the channels via their respective Electronic Programme Guides (EPG). However, the Freesat data needs to pass through an hub, operated by Sky. This is because both platforms use different systems and technologies.

The BBC say “that we’re working with Sky on both matters”.

BBC Red Button HD remains available on Freeview HD at channel 303 and Virgin Media at channel 994.

The BBC has confirmed plans for its Red Button service during the summer – following earlier reports about the appearance of some “test” frequencies. (http://satandpcguy.com/blog/2013/06/bbc-red-button-services-join-freesat/ )

The BBC have confirmed that the expanded Red Button service would offer HD coverage of the British F1 Grand Prix, Women’s Euros, Diamond League Athletics, Moto GP and the Confederations Cup, and Standard definition streams, will be used for Red Button coverage of Glastonbury and will also be offering coverage from Wimbledon.

BBC Red Button HD will start on 13th June 2013.
BBC Red Button SD will start on 24th June 2013.

To enable easy selection and recording of Red Button content, the streams will be available on the Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) of all digital platforms.

BBC RB HD will be available on Freeview 303, Freesat 980, Sky 977 and Virgin Media 994.
BBC RB 1 will be available on Freeview 301, Freesat 981, Sky 978 and Virgin Media 991.
BBC RB 2 will be available on Freeview 302, Freesat 982, Sky 979 and Virgin Media 992.
BBC RB 3 will be available on Freeview N/A, Freesat 983, Sky 980 and Virgin Media 993.

(Sky carriage are subject to agreement).

BBC Red Button

As previously mentioned ( http://satandpcguy.com/blog/2013/05/bbc-wimbledon-coverage-bbc-red-button-channels ) the BBC have been testing some new channels, or rather BBC Red Button channels.

Presumably this will be for the duration of thee summer so that they can use it for multiple matches during Wimbledon and for their Glastonbury coverage.

In the last few days two of these “BBC Red Button” channels have been added to Freesat receivers.

BBC Red Button 1 HD is now on Freesat channel 980
BBC Red Button 1 SD is now on Freesat channel 981

They are not yet available on a Sky box, but presumably they will be part of the BBC Red Button service via the Red Button Menu, as in previous years.

They can be added NOW to non Sky and non Freesat boxes using the following frequencies:

BBC Red Button 1 SD tagged as ‘6390’ is on 10.773 H 22000
BBC Red Button 1 HD tagged as ‘8900’ is on 11.023 H 23000 HD

In addition, the two other channels tagged as 54380 and 54381 on frequency 12.643 V, SR 27.500, FEC 2/3 and are showing a BBC test loop, and showing BBC Red Button on their programme information banner. They are still showing a BBC test loop. Will this mean more BBC Red button streams using these two channels?

With the Wimbledon tennis championships coming soon, there has been speculation about the BBC coverage of the tournament.

In previous years the BBC Red Button service on the TV, via Freesat and Sky, has offered about 5 separate streams each showing a different match.

With last years “budget cuts” these streams were reduced to a single Red Button feed

So some viewers were left wondering what would happen to their tennis coverage.

Well over the last few days a number of “new” BBC channels have appeared on various frequencies on the UK TV satellites.

A new HD channel tagged as “8900” has appeared on frequency 11023 H, 23000, FEC 2/3. This channel has programme data “This is BBC Red Button HD”.

In addition, two more “channels” tagged as “54380” and “54381” have appeared on frequency 12.643 V, SR 27.500, FEC 2/3 and are showing a BBC test loop.

So perhaps the BBC are temporarily expanding the number of Red Button screens for their Wimbledon coverage?
