Sky Sports subs to get free Sky Mobile TV
Sky has confirmed plans to offer Sky Sports customers nearly six months’ free access to its mobile and online TV services as competition for digital TV subscribers intensifies.
From July 12, all Sky Sports Pack subscribers will be able to access the Sky Mobile TV and Sky Player services without charge until December 31.
The deal will mean that subscribers can watch a range of content, including Premier League football and Sky Sports News, live on devices such as the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, along with PC, Mac and FetchTV Smartbox.
Subscribers will only be permitted one offer per service per household and after December 31 they will be automatically charged the standard Sky Mobile TV subscription price if they have not cancelled the package first. The same situation will occur for anyone who cancels their Sky Sports Pack subscription at any time throughout the year.
“Delivering Sky Sports and Sky News content over multiple devices – including HD over the set top box, online and on mobile – gives our subscribers more choice and control over when and where they enjoy our services, providing more value and convenience,” said Sky chief operating officer Mike Darcey.
“By offering innovative access to Sky Sports across Mobile TV and Sky Player, we are providing a truly accessible multiplatform experience for our customers.”
Sky’s offer comes as competition for Sky Sports customers rapidly gathers pace, with BT Vision, Top Up TV and Virgin Media all looking to capitalise on Ofcom’s move to enforce a wholesale price cut on Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2.
BT Vision today confirmed plans to offer both channels to its subscribers in time for the start of the new Premier League season in mid-August.
Virgin Media also recently announced a range of price cuts to Sky’s premium sport and movie channels for its cable TV subscribers.
