Sky Sports Set to Win ATP and WTA Tennis Rights
ATP and WTA tennis events are expected to move to Sky Sports as reports suggest a major shake-up in UK tennis broadcasting rights is approaching.
The proposed deal would see Sky Sports become the primary UK broadcaster for ATP and WTA Tour events from 2024 onwards, ending Amazon Prime Video’s current coverage agreement.
If confirmed, the move would represent one of the biggest changes to UK tennis broadcasting in recent years.
‘Multiple sources’ are confirming that Sky will become the exclusive home of tennis from 2024 after signing a deal to show both ATP and WTA events. This has been rumoured for a few months, but now seems to be a certainty.
This deal also covers broadcast rights for Skys other main territories of Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy.
What Would Change?
Under the reported plans, Sky Sports would gain the UK rights to show a large range of ATP and WTA tournaments.
Coverage would likely include:
- ATP Masters 1000 events
- ATP 500 tournaments
- ATP 250 tournaments
- WTA Tour events
- End-of-season finals
- Daily highlights and analysis
The agreement would return much of regular tour tennis coverage to traditional satellite television after several years primarily on streaming platforms.
Amazon Prime Video Currently Holds the Rights
Since 2019, Amazon Prime Video has held the UK rights to most ATP and WTA Tour events.
The move to streaming represented a major shift away from traditional television broadcasting for tennis fans in Britain.
While many viewers welcomed the flexibility of online streaming, others criticised the fragmentation of sports rights across multiple services.
Under the current system, tennis fans often require subscriptions to several broadcasters to watch all major tournaments, including:
- Amazon Prime Video
- Eurosport
- BBC
- Sky Sports
The possible move to Sky Sports would once again reshape the UK tennis viewing landscape.
Sky Sports Already Has a Strong Tennis History
Sky Sports has a long history of tennis broadcasting in the UK.
Over the years, the broadcaster has shown:
- US Open coverage
- ATP Tour events
- Davis Cup tennis
- WTA tournaments
- Exhibition matches
The broadcaster already operates extensive sports production facilities and dedicated sports channels capable of supporting year-round tennis coverage.
Sky Sports also increasingly promotes UHD and HDR sports broadcasting for premium events.
BBC Would Continue Wimbledon Coverage
The tennis broadcasting market will still remain fragmented across multiple broadcasters and streaming platforms.
Under the expected arrangements:
- Wimbledon coverage will remain with the BBC
- The Australian Open will continue on Eurosport
- The French Open will remain on Eurosport
- The US Open is also expected to stay with Eurosport
This means UK tennis fans may still require access to multiple broadcasters and streaming services to follow the full tennis calendar.
Even with ATP and WTA Tour events potentially moving to Sky Sports, viewers may still need separate access to:
- Sky Sports
- Eurosport
- BBC
to watch all major tournaments and Grand Slam events throughout the season.
The proposed changes would therefore mainly affect regular ATP and WTA Tour coverage rather than the Grand Slam tournaments themselves.
Why the Rights Matter
Live sports rights have become increasingly important within the television industry.
Premium sports content helps broadcasters attract:
- Subscribers
- Advertising revenue
- Streaming users
- Long-term customers
Tennis remains one of the world’s most watched sports, with year-round tournaments attracting large international audiences.
For Sky Sports, securing ATP and WTA rights would significantly strengthen its overall sports portfolio.
