Why Satellite TV Signals Struggle During Hot Weather
During the summer months, many people notice increased problems with television, satellite, mobile phone and wireless internet signals. Hot weather, humidity and changing atmospheric conditions can all have an impact on electronic signal transmission, especially during periods of extreme heat.
These problems are often most noticeable when viewers are trying to watch major summer sporting events such as Wimbledon, the Euros, Formula One or the Olympics, precisely at the time when weather conditions become more challenging for satellite and terrestrial broadcasting systems.
Satellite TV viewers in Spain and southern Europe may experience the biggest issues because UK television signals arriving from Astra satellites are already relatively weak compared to reception levels in the UK.

Humidity places large numbers of water particles into the atmosphere. These water droplets can absorb and scatter radio signals, weakening them before they reach your satellite dish, TV aerial or wireless receiver.
This effect is similar to the well-known “rain fade” issue that causes satellite TV interruptions during heavy rainstorms.
Heat itself can also reduce signal efficiency. Extremely hot air changes atmospheric density and can affect how radio waves travel through the atmosphere. Under certain conditions, signals may bend, reflect or interfere with one another.
For terrestrial TV systems such as Freeview in the UK or TDT in Spain, this can lead to co-channel interference where distant transmitters temporarily interfere with local broadcasts.
Satellite Dish and Equipment Problems
The weather does not only affect the signals themselves.
Satellite dish equipment can also struggle during extreme summer temperatures.
LNBs, the receiving units mounted at the front of satellite dishes, spend many hours in direct sunlight during the summer. As temperatures increase, electronic performance can drop, especially on older equipment.
Metal satellite dishes can also slightly expand in extreme heat. In some cases, poorly made or slightly warped dishes may lose their precise shape, reducing signal focus and making reception problems worse.
If a dish is already slightly misaligned, summer weather conditions can push weaker channels beyond usable reception levels.

- 4G and 5G internet
- WiFi systems
- Wireless broadband
Many users report slower internet speeds during hot and humid weather, particularly during the late afternoon and evening when humidity levels rise.
In coastal regions, where moisture levels are often higher, these effects can become even more noticeable.
Why Reception Often Improves in Winter
Many satellite viewers in Spain notice that UK TV reception improves dramatically during autumn and winter.
Cooler air, lower humidity and more stable atmospheric conditions help signals travel more efficiently. Satellite dishes and electronic equipment also operate more effectively in lower temperatures.
This is why some UK channels that struggle during hot summer afternoons may return perfectly during cooler evenings or winter months.
Can Anything Be Done?
A properly aligned satellite dish with a good quality LNB will always perform better during difficult weather conditions.
Larger satellite dishes also provide more signal margin, helping reduce the impact of heat and humidity on weaker UK TV channels.
However, during extreme summer weather, some temporary signal disruption may still be unavoidable, especially in southern parts of Europe where UK satellite signals are already operating near the edge of coverage areas.
