With many people and installers getting confused with terminology used for TV, hopefully this guide will help people understand what is and is not available in Spain.

It should also help people to determine what equipment they require to receive UK TV in Spain.

Many times I have been contacted by people who have read incorrect information on the internet, or given bad advice by people. Most have Freeview boxes, and were attempting to connect them to a satellite dish, or expecting UK TV when connecting them to a TV aerial in Spain – both of which is not possible, despite what they may have been told.

Channel Types:
Channels can be broken down into four categories:

Free to air – channels that are transmitted “in the clear”, with no encryption, or subscription. Examples include BBC, ITV, Channel Four.

Free to view – channels that are transmitted with encryption, so require a viewing card, but do not require a subscription.Examples include Motors TV, LFCTV.

Pay channels – channels that are transmitted with encryption, so require a viewing card, and a subscription. Examples include Sky One, Sky Atlantic, Sky Sports

Pay per view – channels that are transmitted with encryption, so require a viewing card, and one off payment. Usually boxing and WWE Wrestling

BBC licence fee to remain for a decade

A committee of MPs has decided to support the retention of BBC licence fee for the next decade, however, has stated the licence has “no long-term future”.
The fee has come under pressure with the shift in national viewing habits as audiences increasingly catch up on programmes online.

Figures released by the BBC show that the BBC iPlayer received over 2.6 billion requests for television programmes in 2014—requests from tablets increased by over 50% to 801 million, while those from mobiles were up by over 30% to 662 million.

UK Satellite TV Installations:

There are 11 subscription free HD TV channels available via satellite, including BBC1HD, BBC2HD, BBC3HD, BBC4HD, ITV1HD and C4HD.
Much better image resolution on a HD TV than a TV rebroadcaster or internet IPTV system!

Satellite Dish Installations in my service area (Calpe to Valencia) :

a 100x110cm (1.1m) satellite dish will work for people with limited space. Standard installation of this dish is from 200 euros.

a 125x135cm (1.25/1.35m) satellite dish would provide better reception and is the “recommended” dish for my area. Standard installation of this dish of from 275 euros.

Astra 2C : UK TV moves into position for back up purposes – and if some UK TV channels do move on to Astra 2C then there should be no worries about reception in Spain, due it its very generous footprint.

Astra 2E (the second new UK TV satellite) Update : 14/01/14 : According to various satellite tracking websites tonight, Astra 2E is finally on its way from its test location of 43 east, towards the UK TV location of 28 east. At the time of writing, it is at 42 east and moving slowly.

So it will take several days for it to move into location, and then it is expected a few test frequencies will be fired up, and only then can we start to work out its reception in Spain.

So apparently another “expert” was on an Costa Blanca radio station recently, and according to him the next new UK TV satellite will be launched, and channels like BBC and ITV will be moved over to this new satellite “in the next month or so”.

Well, I think he needs a new calendar, as the next new UK TV satellite, Astra 2E, is, and has always been, scheduled for launch in June 2013.

Not in March / April or even May.

It is no wonder there is so much confusion about UK TV in Spain when even the “experts” cannot even get their facts right!

It is almost as bad as “installers” in the area passing 1.25m satellite dishes off as 1.4m satellite dishes.

If you lose channels for the next 2 weeks at around 10-11 am for a few minutes then this is normal for this time of year.

Basically the sun is right behind the satellites, and the energy from the sun will swamp out the weaker satellite signals.

There is nothing you can do about it, as it can even affect “big dishes” also.

Rebooting the box will not help – apart from killing time until the signal returns again

It does not happen on ALL channels, as some are stronger than others.

This loss of signal happens twice a year in March and October – around the time of the equinoxes.
