Channel 5 to Broadcast Club World Cup in deal with Dazn
Channel 5 will broadcast the Club World Cup live this summer following a sublicensing agreement with global rights holder Dazn.
The Guardian has learned that 23 of the tournament’s 63 matches will be aired on Channel 5 under a newly signed cross-promotional deal. This includes 15 group stage matches, four round-of-16 fixtures, two quarter-finals, one semi-final, and the final. The remaining 40 matches will be streamed exclusively on Dazn, which plans to make the entire expanded competition available free-to-air globally through its app.
Featuring teams such as Chelsea and Manchester City, the Club World Cup will be the most high-profile sports event to air on Channel 5. The broadcaster, which has previously held rights to the Europa League and various highlights shows, is also in discussions with the England and Wales Cricket Board to potentially acquire rights to two men’s and two women’s England T20 matches this summer.
Dazn secured global broadcasting rights for the tournament in February in a $1 billion (£787m) deal, reportedly backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. The kingdom’s Surj Sports Investment group confirmed last month it had acquired a minority stake in Dazn valued at the same amount. FIFA later announced a $1 billion prize and appearance fund, with the winners potentially earning up to $125.8 million. Chelsea and Manchester City have already secured $38.19 million each for qualifying.
The FIFA Club World Cup runs from 14th June to 13th July in the US, bringing together 32 of the most successful club sides from 20 countries and each of the six international football confederations.
A spokesperson for Channel 5 said “We’re delighted to be able to have agreed this fantastic partnership with DAZN to expand free-to-air coverage of the FIFA Club World Cup, live on 5. It’s going to be one of the sporting events of the summer with most of the matches played in the evening peak time and 32 of the world’s biggest clubs involved. We have a growing line up of live sport on 5 and, thanks to our innovative and agile approach to partnership, we’re ambitious about offering our viewers and our advertisers even more in the months to come.”
Earlier this month, The Guardian also revealed that the BBC and ITV chose not to bid for the rights, prioritizing their joint coverage of England’s campaign to defend the Women’s European Championship.
